Index Numbers of Wholesale Price in India (Base: 2004-05=100) Review for the month of September, 2016
The official Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2004-05=100) for the month of September, 2016 declined by 0.2 percent to 182.8 (provisional) from 183.1 (provisional) for the previous month.

INFLATION

The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 3.57% (provisional) for the month of September, 2016 (over September, 2015) as compared to 3.74% (provisional) for the previous month and -4.59% during the corresponding month of the previous year.  Build up inflation rate in the financial year so far was 4.28% compared to a build up rate of 0.23% in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Inflation for important commodities / commodity groups is indicated in Annex-1 and Annex-II.

The movement of the index for the various commodity groups is summarized below:-

PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 20.12%)

The index for this major group declined by 1.9  percent to 263.9 (provisional) from 268.9 (provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items which showed variations during the month are as follows:-

The index for ‘Food Articles’ group declined by 1.6 percent to 279.6 (provisional) from 284.2 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of urad (12%), arhar, moong and poultry chicken (8% each), masur (5%), fruits & vegetables (4%), mutton and bajra (3% each), fish-marine and gram (2% each) and condiments & spices, barley and egg (1% each).  However, the price of fish-inland and tea (2% each) and jowar, coffee, ragi, wheat and milk (1% each) moved up.

The index for  ‘Non-Food Articles’ group declined by 2.5 percent to 230.3 (provisional) from 236.3 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of raw rubber (13%), groundnut seed (6%), soyabean, raw cotton and mesta (5% each),      flowers (4%), guar seed, raw jute and gingelly seed (2% each) and hides (raw) and linseed (1% each).  However, the price of raw silk   (7%), sunflower (6%), copra (coconut), castor seed and coir fibre (2% each) and safflower (kardi seed) (1%) moved up.

The index for ‘Minerals’ group declined by 2.7 percent to  210.4 (provisional) from 216.3  (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of copper ore (8%), magnesite (5%), manganese ore and iron ore (3% each) and phosphorite and crude petroleum (2% each).  However, the price of limestone (4%), zinc concentrate (3%) and chromite and sillimanite (1% each) moved up.

FUEL & POWER (Weight 14.91%)

The index for this major group rose by 1.8 percent to 185.4 (provisional) from 182.2 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of furnace oil and petrol (6% each), high speed diesel (3%), kerosene (2%) and bitumen (1%).  However, the price of aviation turbine fuel (5%) declined.

MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS (Weight 64.97%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.3 percent to 157.1 (provisional) from 156.7 (provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the month are as follows:-

The index for ‘Food Products’ group rose by 0.6 percent to 192.5 (provisional) from 191.3 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of gram powder (besan) (12%), coffee powder and processed prawn (4% each), wheat flour (atta) and maida (3% each), cotton seed oil (2%) and groundnut oil, rice bran oil, sunflower oil, canned fish, mustard & rapeseed oil, sooji (rawa), palm oil, powder milk and gur (1% each).  However, the price of tea dust (unblended) and gingelly oil (2% each) and tea leaf (unblended), oil cakes and tea dust (blended) (1% each) declined.

The index for ‘Textiles’ group rose by 0.1 percent to 142.2 (provisional) from 142.1 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of jute yarn (1%).  However, the price of tyre cord fabric and gunny and hessian cloth (4% each),     jute sacking cloth (2%) and jute sacking bag (1%) declined.

The index for ‘Wood & Wood Products’ group rose by 1.6 percent to 200.8 (provisional) from 197.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of plywood & fibre board (3%) and timber / wooden planks and processed wood (1 % each).

The index for ‘Paper & Paper Products’ group declined by 0.1 percent to 156.8 (provisional) from 157.0 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of newspaper (3%) and newsprint and corrugated sheet boxes (1% each).  However, the price of computer stationery (1%) moved up.

The index for ‘Leather & Leather Products’ group declined by 0.2 percent to 145.8 (provisional) from 146.1 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of leather footwear (1%).  However, the price of leathers (1%) moved up.

The index for ‘Rubber & Plastic Products’ group rose by 0.1 percent to 147.8 (provisional) from 147.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of rubber products (1%).  However, the price of tubes (1%) declined.

The index for ‘Chemicals & Chemical Products’ group declined by 0.4 percent to 150.6 (provisional) from 151.2 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of di ammonium phosphate (3%), non-cyclic compound and basic inorganic chemicals (2% each) and rubber chemicals and explosives (1% each).  However, the price of vitamins and pesticides (1% each) moved up.

The index for ‘Non-Metallic Mineral Products’ group declined by 0.1 percent to 179.4 (provisional) from 179.5 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of slag cement (2%) and polished granite (1%).  However, the price of lime (1%) moved up.

The index for ‘Basic Metals, Alloys & Metal Products’ group rose by 0.7 percent to 153.0 (provisional) from 151.9 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of gp/gc sheets and plates (4% each), rounds (3%), melting scrap,     angles, HRC, sponge iron and wire rods (2% each) and lead, steel rods, rebars, pig iron, CRC, nuts/bolts/screw/ washers,     joist & beams, steel castings, pencil  ingots, silver and billets (1% each).

The index for ‘Transport, Equipment & Parts’ group rose by 0.1 percent to 139.8 (provisional) from 139.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of motor cycle / scooter / moped (1%).  However, the price of railway  axle & wheel (2%) declined.

FINAL INDEX FOR THE MONTH OF JULY, 2016 (BASE YEAR: 2004-05=100)

For the month of July, 2016, the final Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2004-05=100) stood at 184.2 as compared to 183.9 (provisional) and annual rate of inflation based on final index stood at 3.72 percent as compared to 3.55 percent (provisional) respectively as reported on 16.08.2016.

The official Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2004-05=100) for the month of June, 2016 rose by 1.4 percent to 182.0 (provisional) from 179.4 (provisional) for the previous month.

INFLATION

The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 1.62% (provisional) for the month of June, 2016 (over June, 2015) as compared to 0.79% (provisional) for the previous month and -2.13% during the corresponding month of the previous year.  Build up inflation rate in the financial year so far was 3.82% compared to a build up rate of 1.70% in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Inflation for important commodities / commodity groups is indicated in Annex-1 and Annex-II.

The movement of the index for the various commodity groups is summarized below:-

PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 20.12%)

The index for this major group rose by 2.9 percent to 262.8 (provisional) from 255.3 (provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items which showed variations during the month are as follows:-

The index for ‘Food Articles’ group rose by 2.9 percent to 279.0 (provisional) from 271.1 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of fruits & vegetables and urad (8% each), gram (7%), tea and maize (3% each), rice and wheat   (2% each) and barley, milk, mutton and fish-marine (1% each).  However, the price of moong (4%), poultry chicken and ragi (2% each) and pork, bajra, beef & buffalo meat and masur (1% each) declined.

The index for  ‘Non-Food Articles’ group rose by 2.1 percent to 231.2 (provisional) from 226.4 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of linseed (12%), raw cotton (11%), fodder (5%), raw jute (4%), cotton seed (3%),      raw rubber,  rape & mustard seed, raw wool and groundnut seed (2% each) and sunflower (1%).  However, the price of      flowers (9%), safflower (kardi seed) (5%), copra (coconut) (4%), castor seed (3%),  gingelly seed, guar seed and niger seed (2% each) and raw silk and mesta (1% each) declined.

The index for ‘Minerals’ group rose by 6.9 percent to 199.0 (provisional) from 186.2 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of manganese ore (17%), crude petroleum (11%), iron ore (5%), copper ore (2%) and chromite (1%). However, the price of sillimanite (6%), phosphorite (2%) and magnesite (1%) declined.

FUEL & POWER (Weight 14.91%)

The index for this major group rose by 3.4 percent to 186.5 (provisional) from 180.3 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of furnace oil (13%), aviation turbine fuel (11%), high speed diesel (8%), petrol (5%), kerosene (2%) and LPG (1%).  However, the price of non-coking coal (12%) and bitumen (2%) declined.

MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS (Weight 64.97%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.2 percent to 156.0 (provisional) from 155.7 (provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the month are as follows:-

The index for ‘Food Products’ group rose by 0.9 percent to 186.9 (provisional) from 185.3 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of tea dust (unblended) (5%), sooji (rawa) (4%), vanaspati (3%), oil cakes, cotton seed oil,     mixed spices, wheat flour (atta), groundnut oil and tea dust (blended) (2% each) and gur, sugar, tea leaf (unblended),     palm oil,  powder milk, gola (cattle feed), maida and mustard & rapeseed oil (1% each).  However, the price of tea leaf (blended) (5%), processed prawn (3%), gingelly oil (2%) and copra oil (1%) declined.

The index for ‘Beverages, Tobacco & Tobacco Products’ group rose by 0.8 percent to 220.7 (provisional) from 219.0 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of imfl – blended (5%) and cigarette (3%).  However, the price of      beer (4%), rectified spirit (2%) and dried tobacco and soft drinks & carbonated water (1% each) declined.

The index for ‘Textiles’ group rose by 0.2 percent to 140.9 (provisional) from 140.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of gunny and hessian cloth (2%), tyre cord fabric, jute yarn, jute sacking cloth and cotton yarn (1% each).  However, the price of   man made fabric and jute sacking bag (1% each) declined.

The index for ‘Wood & Wood Products’ group declined by 0.2 percent to 196.6 (provisional) from 197.0 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of  plywood & fibre board (2%).  However, the price of timber / wooden planks and processed wood (2% each) moved up.

The index for ‘Paper & Paper Products’ group rose by 0.3 percent to 155.9 (provisional) from 155.4 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of paper rolls (2%) and newsprint (1%).

The index for ‘Leather & Leather Products’ group declined by 0.1 percent to 145.5 (provisional) from 145.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of leather handbags/wallets (3%), footwear/safety boot (2%) and other leather foot wear (1%).  However, the price of leather gloves (2%) and crome tanned leather and leather shoe upper (1% each) moved up.

The index for ‘Rubber & Plastic Products’ group rose by 0.1 percent to 146.1 (provisional) from 146.0 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of plastic products (1%).  However, the price of tubes (7%) and rubber products     (1% each) declined.

The index for ‘Chemicals & Chemical Products’ group rose by 0.5 percent to 150.9 (provisional) from 150.1 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of ammonium sulphate (4%), rubber chemicals (2%) and basic organic chemicals, paints, urea, polymers, non-cyclic compound, basic inorganic chemicals, antibiotics and dye & dye intermediates (1% each).  However, the price of lacquer & varnishes (1%) declined.

The index for ‘Non-Metallic Mineral Products’ group declined by 0.6 percent to 177.7 (provisional) from 178.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of marbles (8%) and asbestos corrugated sheet (4%).  However, the price of railway sleeper and polished granite (2% each) and lime (1%) moved up.

The index for ‘Basic Metals, Alloys & Metal Products’ group declined by 0.6 percent to 153.9 (provisional) from 154.9 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of rounds (5%), wire rods and billets (4% each), sponge iron,     pencil  ingots and angles (3% each),  melting scrap, gp/gc sheets, joist & beams and rebars (2% each) and steel structures,     plates,  pressure cooker, HRC, utensils (other than aluminium), CRC and metal containers (1% each).  However, the price of furniture (4%), silver (2%) and gold & gold ornaments, pipes/tubes/rods/strips, aluminium and steel: pipes & tubes (1 % each) moved up.

The index for ‘Machinery & Machine Tools’ group declined by 0.1 percent to 135.3 (provisional) from 135.5 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of fibre optic cable (10%), electric motor starters (4%), grinding /wet coffee machinery (3%) and pvc insulated cable, ball/roller bearing, electric motors and machine tools (1% each).  However, the price of lifts (2%) and heating elements, engines, insulators, industrial valves and washing / laundry machines (1%each) moved up.

The index for ‘ Transport, Equipment & Parts ‘ group rose by  0.1  percent to 139.4 (provisional) from 139.3 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of tractors (2%)

FINAL INDEX FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL, 2016 (BASE YEAR: 2004-05=100)

For the month of April, 2016, the final Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2004-05=100) stood at 177.8 as compared to 177.0 (provisional) and annual rate of inflation based on final index stood at 0.79 percent as compared to 0.34 percent (provisional) respectively as reported on 16.05.2016.

Index Numbers of Wholesale Price in India (Base: 2004-05=100) Review, Wholesale Price in India

The official Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2004-05=100) for the month of March, 2016 rose by 0.3 percent to 174.6 (provisional) from 174.0 (provisional) for the previous month.

INFLATION

The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at -0.85% (provisional) for the month of March, 2016 (over March, 2015) as compared to -0.91% (provisional) for the previous month and -2.33% during the corresponding month of the previous year.  Build up inflation rate in the financial year so far was -0.85% compared to a build up rate of -2.33% in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Inflation for important commodities / commodity groups is indicated in Annex-1 and Annex-II.

The movement of the index for the various commodity groups is summarized below:-

PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 20.12%)

The index for this major group declined by 0.2 percent to 244.1 (provisional) from 244.7 (provisional) for the previous month.  The groups and items which showed variations during the month are as follows:-

The index for ‘Food Articles’ group declined by 0.2 percent to 258.6 (provisional) from 259.1 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of tea (7%), egg (6%), arhar and masur (4% each), condiments & spices (3%), gram, urad, moong and fish-inland (2% each) and barley and fruits & vegetables (1% each).  However, the price of poultry chicken   (9%), bajra (4%), fish-marine (3%) and maize, jowar, beef & buffalo meat, milk and pork (1% each) moved up.

The index for ‘Non-Food Articles’ group rose by 0.5 percent to 219.0 (provisional) from 217.9 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of raw rubber (17%), groundnut seed (8%), sugarcane (6%), raw jute, soyabean and linseed (2% each) and coir fibre, cotton seed, fodder and safflower (kardi seed) (1% each).  However, the price of flowers (17%), copra (coconut) (8%), rape & mustard seed (5%), raw silk, guar seed, raw cotton, gingelly seed and mesta (3% each) and castor seed and niger seed (2% each) declined.

The index for ‘Minerals’  group declined by 2.5 percent to 178.5 (provisional) from 183.0  (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of crude petroleum (4%), iron ore (3%), magnesite (2%) and chromite (1%).  However, the price of zinc concentrate (4%) and sillimanite (1%) moved up.

FUEL & POWER (Weight 14.91%)

The index for this major group rose by 1.7 percent to 172.4 (provisional) from 169.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of aviation turbine fuel (14%), high speed diesel (6%), furnace oil (5%) and kerosene and bitumen (1% each).  However, the price of electricity and petrol (3% each) and LPG (1%) declined.

MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS (Weight 64.97%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.4 percent to 153.7 (provisional) from 153.1 (provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the month are as follows:-

The index for ‘Food Products’ group declined by 0.2 percent to 177.7 (provisional) from 178.1 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of tea leaf (unblended) (14%), tea leaf (blended) (4%), tea dust (unblended) (3%), mustard & rapeseed oil (2%) and gur (1%).  However, the price of gola (cattle feed) (5%), processed prawn, gingelly oil and tea dust (blended) (3% each), khandsari and canned fish (2% each) and powder milk, rice bran oil, palm oil, cotton seed oil and bakery products (1% each) moved up.

The index for ‘Beverages, Tobacco & Tobacco Products’ group rose by 1.4 percent to 210.2 (provisional) from 207.2 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of imfl-blended (11%), dried tobacco (7%), chewing tobacco (scented or not) (4%) and soft drinks & carbonated water and beer (1% each).  However, the price of zarda (3%) declined.

The index for ‘Textiles’ group rose by 0.1 percent to 139.8 (provisional) from 139.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of jute yarn (6%), jute sacking bag (3%), jute sacking cloth (2%) and man made fabric (1%).  However, the price of tyre cord fabric (2%) declined.

The index for ‘Wood & Wood Products’ group rose by 0.5 percent to 196.9 (provisional) from 195.9 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of processed wood (1%).

The index for ‘Paper & Paper Products’ group rose by 0.4 percent to 156.1 (provisional) from 155.5 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of corrugated sheet boxes (2%) and newspaper, kraft  paper & bags, cream  laid woven paper and paper rolls (1% each).

The index for ‘Leather & Leather Products’ group rose by 0.6 percent to 146.0 (provisional) from 145.2 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of leather footwear and leathers (1%).

The index for ‘Rubber & Plastic Products’ group rose by 0.4 percent to 145.6 (provisional) from 145.0 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of tubes (3%) and plastic products (1%).

The index for ‘Non-Metallic Mineral Products’ group rose by 0.3 percent to 178.3 (provisional) from 177.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of polished granite (2%) and grey cement (1%).  However, the price of railway sleeper (1%) declined.

The index for ‘Basic Metals, Alloys & Metal Products’ group rose by 1.8 percent to 153.1 (provisional) from 150.4 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of gp/gc sheets (7%), rounds (6%), plates and billets (5% each),     HRC, melting scrap, wire rods and angles (4% each), CRC, gold & gold ornaments, joist & beams and pencil  ingots (3% each), silver, sponge iron, nuts/bolts/screw/ washers and rebars (2% each) and pig iron (1%).  However, the price of steel rods (5%), lead (3%), sheets and steel: pipes & tubes (2% each) and pipes/tubes/rods/strips and steel castings (1% each) declined.

The index for ‘Machinery & Machine Tools’ group declined by 0.1 percent to 134.9 (provisional) from 135.1 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of fibre optic cable (9%), fluorescent tubes (3%), pvc insulated cable, electric motors and heat exchanger (2% each) and industrial  valves, engines, conductor and ball/roller bearing (1% each).  However, the price of machine tools (3%) and insulators (1%) moved up.

The index for ‘Transport, Equipment & Parts’ group rose by 0.6 percent to 139.0 (provisional) from 138.2 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of motor cycle / scooter / moped (4%).  However, the price of railway brake gear (2%) declined.

FINAL INDEX FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY, 2016 (BASE YEAR: 2004-05=100)

For the month of January, 2016, the final Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2004-05=100) stood at 175.4 as compared to 175.7 (provisional) and annual rate of inflation based on final index stood at -1.07 percent as compared to     -0.90 percent (provisional) respectively as reported on 15.02.2016.
