The Central Statistics Office (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has revised the Base Year of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 2010=100 to 2012=100 with effect from the release of indices for the month of January 2015.

  1. In this press note, the CPI (Rural, Urban, Combined) on Base 2012=100 is being released for the month of February 2017. In addition to this, Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) for all India Rural, Urban and Combined are also being released for February 2017. All India Inflation rates (on point to point basis i.e. current month over same month of last year, i.e., February 2017 over February 2016), based on General Indices and CFPIs are given as follows:

  1. 4.         Provisional indices for the month of February 2017 and also the final indices for January 2017 are being released with this note for all-India and for State/UTs. All-India provisional General (all-groups), Group and Sub-group level CPI and CFPI numbers for February 2017 for Rural, Urban and Combined are given in Annexure I. The inflation rates of important categories of items are given in Annexure II. State/UT wise provisional General CPI numbers for Rural, Urban and Combined are given in Annexure III. Inflation rates of major States, having population more than 50 lakhs as per population Census 2011, are given in Annexure IV. State/UT–wise Group CPIs are available on the Ministry’s website (mospi.gov.in).
  2. Price data are collected from selected towns by the Field Operations Division of NSSO and from selected villages by the Department of Posts. Price data are received through web portals, maintained by the National Informatics Centre.

Next date of release:  12th April 2017 (Wednesday) for March 2017.

Index Numbers of Wholesale Price in India (Base: 2004-05=100) Review for the month of September, 2016
The official Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2004-05=100) for the month of September, 2016 declined by 0.2 percent to 182.8 (provisional) from 183.1 (provisional) for the previous month.

INFLATION

The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 3.57% (provisional) for the month of September, 2016 (over September, 2015) as compared to 3.74% (provisional) for the previous month and -4.59% during the corresponding month of the previous year.  Build up inflation rate in the financial year so far was 4.28% compared to a build up rate of 0.23% in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Inflation for important commodities / commodity groups is indicated in Annex-1 and Annex-II.

The movement of the index for the various commodity groups is summarized below:-

PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 20.12%)

The index for this major group declined by 1.9  percent to 263.9 (provisional) from 268.9 (provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items which showed variations during the month are as follows:-

The index for ‘Food Articles’ group declined by 1.6 percent to 279.6 (provisional) from 284.2 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of urad (12%), arhar, moong and poultry chicken (8% each), masur (5%), fruits & vegetables (4%), mutton and bajra (3% each), fish-marine and gram (2% each) and condiments & spices, barley and egg (1% each).  However, the price of fish-inland and tea (2% each) and jowar, coffee, ragi, wheat and milk (1% each) moved up.

The index for  ‘Non-Food Articles’ group declined by 2.5 percent to 230.3 (provisional) from 236.3 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of raw rubber (13%), groundnut seed (6%), soyabean, raw cotton and mesta (5% each),      flowers (4%), guar seed, raw jute and gingelly seed (2% each) and hides (raw) and linseed (1% each).  However, the price of raw silk   (7%), sunflower (6%), copra (coconut), castor seed and coir fibre (2% each) and safflower (kardi seed) (1%) moved up.

The index for ‘Minerals’ group declined by 2.7 percent to  210.4 (provisional) from 216.3  (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of copper ore (8%), magnesite (5%), manganese ore and iron ore (3% each) and phosphorite and crude petroleum (2% each).  However, the price of limestone (4%), zinc concentrate (3%) and chromite and sillimanite (1% each) moved up.

FUEL & POWER (Weight 14.91%)

The index for this major group rose by 1.8 percent to 185.4 (provisional) from 182.2 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of furnace oil and petrol (6% each), high speed diesel (3%), kerosene (2%) and bitumen (1%).  However, the price of aviation turbine fuel (5%) declined.

MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS (Weight 64.97%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.3 percent to 157.1 (provisional) from 156.7 (provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the month are as follows:-

The index for ‘Food Products’ group rose by 0.6 percent to 192.5 (provisional) from 191.3 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of gram powder (besan) (12%), coffee powder and processed prawn (4% each), wheat flour (atta) and maida (3% each), cotton seed oil (2%) and groundnut oil, rice bran oil, sunflower oil, canned fish, mustard & rapeseed oil, sooji (rawa), palm oil, powder milk and gur (1% each).  However, the price of tea dust (unblended) and gingelly oil (2% each) and tea leaf (unblended), oil cakes and tea dust (blended) (1% each) declined.

The index for ‘Textiles’ group rose by 0.1 percent to 142.2 (provisional) from 142.1 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of jute yarn (1%).  However, the price of tyre cord fabric and gunny and hessian cloth (4% each),     jute sacking cloth (2%) and jute sacking bag (1%) declined.

The index for ‘Wood & Wood Products’ group rose by 1.6 percent to 200.8 (provisional) from 197.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of plywood & fibre board (3%) and timber / wooden planks and processed wood (1 % each).

The index for ‘Paper & Paper Products’ group declined by 0.1 percent to 156.8 (provisional) from 157.0 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of newspaper (3%) and newsprint and corrugated sheet boxes (1% each).  However, the price of computer stationery (1%) moved up.

The index for ‘Leather & Leather Products’ group declined by 0.2 percent to 145.8 (provisional) from 146.1 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of leather footwear (1%).  However, the price of leathers (1%) moved up.

The index for ‘Rubber & Plastic Products’ group rose by 0.1 percent to 147.8 (provisional) from 147.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of rubber products (1%).  However, the price of tubes (1%) declined.

The index for ‘Chemicals & Chemical Products’ group declined by 0.4 percent to 150.6 (provisional) from 151.2 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of di ammonium phosphate (3%), non-cyclic compound and basic inorganic chemicals (2% each) and rubber chemicals and explosives (1% each).  However, the price of vitamins and pesticides (1% each) moved up.

The index for ‘Non-Metallic Mineral Products’ group declined by 0.1 percent to 179.4 (provisional) from 179.5 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of slag cement (2%) and polished granite (1%).  However, the price of lime (1%) moved up.

The index for ‘Basic Metals, Alloys & Metal Products’ group rose by 0.7 percent to 153.0 (provisional) from 151.9 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of gp/gc sheets and plates (4% each), rounds (3%), melting scrap,     angles, HRC, sponge iron and wire rods (2% each) and lead, steel rods, rebars, pig iron, CRC, nuts/bolts/screw/ washers,     joist & beams, steel castings, pencil  ingots, silver and billets (1% each).

FINAL INDEX FOR THE MONTH OF JULY, 2016 (BASE YEAR: 2004-05=100)

For the month of July, 2016, the final Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2004-05=100) stood at 184.2 as compared to 183.9 (provisional) and annual rate of inflation based on final index stood at 3.72 percent as compared to 3.55 percent (provisional) respectively as reported on 16.08.2016.

Index Numbers of Wholesale Price in India (Base: 2004-05=100)

Review for the month of July, 2016

 The official Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2004-05=100) for the month of July, 2016 rose by 1.0 percent to 183.9 (provisional) from 182.0 (provisional) for the previous month.

INFLATION

The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 3.55% (provisional) for the month of July, 2016 (over July, 2015) as compared to 1.62% (provisional) for the previous month and -4.00% during the corresponding month of the previous year.  Build up inflation rate in the financial year so far was 4.91% compared to a build up rate of 0.85% in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Inflation for important commodities / commodity groups is indicated in Annex-1 and Annex-II.

The movement of the index for the various commodity groups is summarized below:-

PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 20.12%)

The index for this major group rose by 2.5 percent to 269.5 (provisional) from 262.8 (provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items which showed variations during the month are as follows:-

The index for ‘Food Articles’ group rose by 2.4 percent to 285.8 (provisional) from 279.0 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of gram (20%), fruits & vegetables (7%), egg (5%), maize (3%), barley (2%) and coffee,      beef & buffalo meat, jowar, wheat, urad, rice, masur and pork (1% each).  However, the price of poultry chicken (5%),      ragi (4%), moong, mutton, bajra and tea (2% each) and fish-inland and fish-marine (1% each) declined.

The index for ‘Non-Food Articles’ group rose by 2.3 percent to 236.6 (provisional) from 231.2 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of raw cotton (13%), guar seed (10%), castor seed and raw rubber (7% each),      linseed and cotton seed (5% each), raw wool and rape & mustard seed (3% each) and niger seed, safflower (kardi seed) and groundnut seed (1% each).  However, the price of gingelly seed (7%), flowers (5%), soyabean (4%), raw jute (2%) and mesta (1%) declined.

The index for ‘Minerals’ group rose by 5.0 percent to 208.9 (provisional) from 199.0 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of manganese ore (12%), crude petroleum (9%),  iron ore and copper ore (2% each).  However, the price of sillimanite (12%), zinc concentrate (4%), chromite (2%) and phosphorite (1%) declined.

FUEL & POWER (Weight 14.91%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.8 percent to 187.9 (provisional) from 186.5 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of non-coking coal (15%), aviation turbine fuel (7%) and furnace oil (5%).  However, the price of      petrol (3%) and bitumen (1%) declined.

MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS (Weight 64.97%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.3 percent to 156.4 (provisional) from 156.0 (provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the month are as follows:-

The index for ‘Food Products’ group rose by 1.2 percent to 189.2 (provisional) from 186.9 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of tea leaf (unblended) (8%), tea dust (unblended) (5%), wheat flour (atta) (4%), gur and sooji (rawa) (3% each), maida, groundnut oil, khandsari, sugar and tea dust (blended) (2% each) and ghee, mustard & rapeseed oil and oil cakes (1% each).  However, the price of coffee powder (5%) and copra oil, gola (cattle feed), vanaspati and sunflower oil (1% each) declined.

The index for ‘Textiles’ group rose by 0.4 percent to 141.5 (provisional) from 140.9 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of jute sacking cloth and cotton yarn (2% each) and man made fabric (1%).  However, the price of      gunny and hessian cloth (2%) declined.

The index for ‘Wood & Wood Products’ group declined by 0.3 percent to 196.1 (provisional) from 196.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of timber/wooden planks (2%) and processed wood (1%).  However, the price of  plywood & fibre board (1%) moved up.

The index for ‘Paper & Paper Products’ group rose by 0.5 percent to 156.7 (provisional) from 155.9 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of corrugated sheet boxes (3%), books/ periodicals/ journals (2%) and newsprint (1%).

However, the price of computer stationery (1%) declined.

The index for ‘Leather & Leather Products’ group rose by 0.5 percent to 146.3 (provisional) from 145.5 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of leathers (1%).

The index for ‘Rubber & Plastic Products’ group rose by 0.3 percent to 146.5 (provisional) from 146.1 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of tubes (5%) and rubber products (2%).

The index for ‘Chemicals & Chemical Products’ group rose by 0.1 percent to 151.1 (provisional) from 150.9 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of tooth paste / tooth powder (8%) and hair/body oils, photographic goods,  pesticides and basic inorganic chemicals (1% each).  However, the price of di ammonium phosphate and lacquer & varnishes (1% each) declined.

The index for ‘Non-Metallic Mineral Products’ group rose by  0.5 percent to 178.6 (provisional) from 177.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of marbles (4%) and glass bottles & bottleware, grey cement and lime (1% each).  However, the price of railway sleeper and asbestos corrugated sheet (2% each) declined.

The index for ‘Basic Metals, Alloys & Metal Products’ group declined by 0.6 percent to 153.0 (provisional) from 153.9 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of pig iron and melting scrap (5% each), billets (4%), wire rods   (3%), rounds, angles, CRC, sponge iron, ferro manganese, pencil  ingots, rebars, joist & beams, HRC and plates (2% each) and gp/gc sheets, pipes/tubes/rods/strips and sheets (1% each).  However, the price of silver (6%), steel rods (5%),     lead and steel structures (4% each), gold & gold ornaments (2%) and steel castings, pressure cooker, metal containers and zinc (1% each) moved up.

The index for ‘Transport, Equipment & Parts’ group rose by 0.1 percent to 139.6 (provisional) from 139.4 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of lamp (1%).

FINAL INDEX FOR THE MONTH OF MAY, 2016 (BASE YEAR: 2004-05=100)

For the month of May, 2016, the final Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2004-05=100) stood at 180.2 as compared to 179.4 (provisional) and annual rate of inflation based on final index stood at 1.24 percent as compared to 0.79 percent (provisional) respectively as reported on 14.06.2016.

All India Inflation rates, Consumer Price Index, Consumer Price Index Numbers, July 2016 Consumer Price Index

The Central Statistics Office (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has revised the Base Year of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 2010=100 to 2012=100 with effect from the release of indices for the month of January 2015.

  1. In this press note, the CPI (Rural, Urban, Combined) on Base 2012=100 is being released for the month of July 2016. In addition to this, Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) for all India Rural, Urban and Combined are also being released for July 2016. All India Inflation rates (on point to point basis i.e. current month over same month of last year, i.e., July 2016 over July 2015), based on General Indices and CFPIs are given as follows:

  1. Provisional indices for the month of July 2016 and also the final indices for June 2016 are being released with this note for all-India and for State/UTs. All-India provisional General (all-groups), Group and Sub-group level CPI and CFPI numbers for July 2016 for Rural, Urban and Combined are given in Annexure I. The inflation rates of important categories of items are given in Annexure II. State/UT wise provisional General CPI numbers for Rural, Urban and Combined are given in Annexure III. Inflation rates of major States, having population more than 50 lakhs as per population Census 2011, are given in Annexure IV. State/UT–wise Group CPIs are available on the Ministry’s website (www.mospi.gov.in).
  2. Price data are collected from selected towns by the Field Operations Division of NSSO and from selected villages by the Department of Posts. Price data are received through web portals, maintained by the National Informatics Centre.

Next date of release:  13th September 2016 (Tuesday) for August 2016.
