మహిళలకు అన్యాయం, వివక్షలో హిందూ-ముస్లిం దొందూ దొందే !!

పశువులు పేడ వేస్తూ తిరుగుతున్నా వీధులలో అనుమతించారు తప్ప సాటి మనిషిని అంటరాని వారి పేరుతో వీధులలో తిరగనివ్వకుండా, ఒక వేళ తిరిగినా నోటికి ముంత, నడుములకు చీపుర్లు కట్టించి తిప్పిన రోజులు, వాటికి ఎప్పటి నుంచో వస్తున్న సాంప్రదాయం, ఆచారం అనే ముద్దు పేర్లు తగిలించి అమలు జరిపిన రోజులు లేవా ?

      సామాజిక మీడియాలో ఇటీవలి కాలంలో మతాలను విమర్శించిన వారిని ముఖ్యంగా హిందూ మతాన్ని విమర్శించిన వారిపై కొందరు విరుచుకు పడుతున్నారు. విమర్శలు చేసే వారు రెండు రకాలు. ఒకటి గత వ్యాసంలో పేర్కొన్నట్లు తర్క బద్దమైన సైద్ధాంతిక విమర్శ, రెండవది ద్వేషంతో లేదా వుద్రేకంలో తెలియకుండానే మరో మతాన్ని కించపరిచే వ్యాఖ్యలతో సాగించే చర్చ. రెండవ తరగతిలో మొదటి వారిని మనం అదుపు చేయలేము. వుద్రేకంతో కించపరిచే వ్యాఖ్యలు చేసే వారు తమకు తెలియకుండానే ద్వేషంతో రెచ్చగొట్టే వారి వలలో పడుతున్నారని గ్రహించాలి. అందువలన వాటికి దూరంగా వుండాలి.

     ప్రపంచంలో మతాల చరిత్రను చూస్తే ప్రతి మతం ప్రజలకు దూరమైనపుడు కొత్త మతాలు పుట్టుకు వచ్చాయి. యూదుమతంపై తిరుగుబాటుతో క్రైస్తవం, దానిపై తిరుగుబాటుతో ఇస్లాం అవతరించింది. వీటిలో కొన్ని వుప శాఖలు వున్నాయి. అందుకే వీటన్నింటినీ కలిపి అబ్రహానిక్‌ మతాలని పిలుస్తారు. ఎందుకంటే ఈ మతాలన్నింటా అబ్రహాం అనే దేవుడు లేదా పాత్ర వుంది. ప్రపంచంలో ఈ మతాలకు చెందిన వారు 54శాతం మంది వున్నారు. ఇతర మతాలకు చెందిన వారు 32శాతం, ఒక సంఘటిత మతం లేదా అసలు మతాన్ని పాటించని వారు 14శాతం వున్నారు. క్రైస్తవం, ఇస్లాం మతాలలో ఒకటి , రెండు స్థానాలలో వున్నాయి. శైవం, వైష్ణవంలో దేవతలు, రూపాలు, పేర్లు వేరైనా ఆదిపురుషుడు ఒకరే అన్నట్లుగా యూదు, క్రైస్తవంలో అబ్రహాం కాస్తా ఇస్లాంలోకి వచ్చే సరికి ఇబ్రహీంగా మారిపోయారు. అలాగే హిందూమతంగా చెప్పబడుతున్న మతాలపై తిరుగుబాటుగా జైనం, బౌద్ధం అవతరించింది.

వేదాలపై వేల సంవత్సరాల నాడే చార్వాకులు విమర్శలు చేశారు. ఒక మతం వునికిలో వుండగా మరొక మతం వచ్చిందంటే పాత మతంపై విమర్శలు , వ్యతిరేకత లేకుండా వుండవు. శైవులు-వైష్ణవులు ఎలా కొట్లాడుకున్నదీ మనకు తెలిసిందే. అందువలన హిందూ మతంపై విమర్శ అన్నది కొత్తగా వచ్చింది కాదు, బయటి వారు లేదా వ్యతిరేకులు, మతంపై విశ్వాసం లేనివారు గానీ ప్రారంభించింది అసలే కాదు

      భోజపురి వంటి అనేక ప్రాంతీయ భాషలు హిందీతో సారూప్యత కలిగి వున్న కారణంగా వాటన్నింటినీ హిందీ అని పిలుస్తున్నట్లుగా హిందూమతంగా చెప్పబడే దానిలో శైవ,వైష్ణవం వంటి ప్రధాన స్రవంతి మతాలతో పాటు ఇతర అనేక చిన్న మతాలు సారూప్యత కలిగిన కారణంగా వాటన్నింటినీ కలిపి హిందూమతంగా లేదా ఇజంగా చెబుతున్నారు.భిన్నమైన విశ్వాసాలు, ఆచారాలున్న ఈ మతాల తత్వశాస్త్రాలపై గతంలో పరస్పరం అనేక విమర్శలు చోటు చేసుకున్నాయి. వీటన్నింటికి మూలమైన వేదాలపై వేల సంవత్సరాల నాడే చార్వాకులు విమర్శలు చేశారు. ఒక మతం వునికిలో వుండగా మరొక మతం వచ్చిందంటే పాత మతంపై విమర్శలు , వ్యతిరేకత లేకుండా వుండవు. శైవులు-వైష్ణవులు ఎలా కొట్లాడుకున్నదీ మనకు తెలిసిందే. అందువలన హిందూ మతంపై విమర్శ అన్నది కొత్తగా వచ్చింది కాదు, బయటి వారు లేదా వ్యతిరేకులు, మతంపై విశ్వాసం లేనివారు గానీ ప్రారంభించింది అసలే కాదు. రామలీల వుత్సవాలు జరిపేవారు కొందరైతే రావణుడిని అభిమానించేవారు మరికొందరు. దేవతలు-దానవులు ఇలా ఎన్నో భిన్నత్వాలు వున్నాయి.జైన మతం దేవుడిని సృష్టికర్త లేదా విధ్వంసకుడిగా అంగీకరించదు, వాటిన్నింటినీ మన సమాజం అంగీకరించింది. అంటే విమర్శలను సహించింది. భారతీయ సంస్కృతిలో అదొక భాగం. అందువలన విమర్శలపై వుద్రేక పడేవారు ఒకసారి వెనక్కు తిరిగి చూసుకోవటం మంచిది. గతంలో శైవం, వైష్ణవం పేరుతో దెబ్బలాడుకున్నవారు రాజీపడి అసలు మతాలను మొత్తంగా విమర్శించేవారిపై సమైక్యంగా ఇప్పుడు తమ దాడిని మొదలు పెట్టారు. ఈ విషయంలో ఇతర మతాలవారితో జెఎసిని ఏర్పాటు చేసినా ఆశ్చర్యం లేదు.

     కుండ కింద మంట పెట్టగానే నీరు ఆవిరి కాదు. వుష్ణోగ్రత పెరిగి వంద డిగ్రీలు దాటిన తరువాతే నీరు తన రూపం మార్చుకొని కొత్త రూపం ధరించి ఆవిరిగా మారుతుంది. అలాగే సమాజ మార్పులకు అనుగుణంగా మతాలు, ఆచారాలు మారనపుడు వాటిలో సంస్కరణలు రావాలని కోరుకుంటారు. వాటిని అడ్డుకుంటే అవి తీవ్రమై కొత్త మతాల ఆవిర్బావానికి నాంది పలుకుతాయి. హిందూమతంలో బాల్యవివాహాలు, కన్యాశుల్కం పేరుతో ఆడపిల్లలను అమ్ముకోవటం, పండు ముదుసలులకు పిన్నవయస్సు బాలికలనిచ్చి వివాహాలు చేయటం సాంప్రదాయంగా లేదా ఆచారంగా ఒక నాడు వున్నాయా లేవా ? పశువులు పేడ వేస్తూ తిరుగుతున్నా వీధులలో అనుమతించారు తప్ప సాటి మనిషిని అంటరాని వారి పేరుతో వీధులలో తిరగనివ్వకుండా, ఒక వేళ తిరిగినా నోటికి ముంత, నడుములకు చీపుర్లు కట్టించి తిప్పిన రోజులు వాటికి ఎప్పటి నుంచో వస్తున్న సాంప్రదాయం, ఆచారం అనే ముద్దు పేర్లు తగిలించి అమలు జరిపిన రోజులు లేవా ? చాతుర్వర్ణ వ్యవస్ధ పేరుతో శూద్రులకు విద్యను దూరం చేయలేదా ? ఆచారాలు, సాంప్రదాయాలు, విశ్వాసాలు, మనోభావాల పేరుతో ప్రస్తుతం విమర్శలను కూడా సహించలేక అసహనంతో రగిలి పోతున్నవారు పైన పేర్కొన్నవాటిని కూడా పునరుద్దరించాలని కోరుకుంటున్నారా ?

బాబరీ వివాదంలో కోర్టు తీర్పులను తాము ఖాతరు చేయబోమని తమ విశ్వాసాలే తమకు ముఖ్యమనే వాదనను ముందుకు తేవటానికి షాబోనో కేసులో ముస్లిం మతశక్తుల వైఖరే స్ఫూర్తి.

      తమ మత వ్యవహారాలలో జోక్యం చేసుకోవద్దని చెప్పటంలో ఏ ఒక్క మతమూ తీసిపోలేదు. ఒకదాన్ని మరొకదానితో పోల్చి తమ చర్యలను సమర్ధించుకుంటున్నాయి. వుదాహరణకు షా బానో కేసునే తీసుకుందాం. విడాకులిచ్చిన తన భర్త భరణం చెల్లింపు గురించి మధ్యప్రదేశ్‌కు చెందిన షా బానో సుప్రీం కోర్టుకు వెళ్లింది.ఆ కేసులో ఆమె గెలిచింది. ఆ సందర్భంగా ఇస్లాం మత పెద్దలుగా వున్నవారు చేసిన వాదన ఏమిటి ? సుప్రీం కోర్టు తీర్పు ఖురాన్‌లో పేర్కొన్నదానికి అనుగుణంగా లేదు కనుక దానిని మేము అంగీకరించం అన్నారు. ముస్లిం ఛాందసుల వత్తిడికి లొంగిన కాంగ్రెస్‌ నేతలు 1986లో చట్ట సవరణ చేసి సుప్రీం కోర్టు తీర్పును నీరు గార్చారు. జస్టిస్‌ విఆర్‌ కృష్ణయ్యర్‌ ఆ చర్యను విమర్శిస్తూ అది ఖురాన్‌కు వ్యతిరేకమని, చట్ట సవరణ తప్పని ఖండించారు. ముస్లింల సంతృప్తీకరణ చర్యగా బిజెపి దానిపై నానా యాగీ చేసింది. ఆ చట్ట సవరణను వుపయోగించుకొని మెజారిటీ పౌరుల సంతృప్తీకరణతో తానే సరికొత్త ఓట్ల రాజకీయానికి తెరతీసింది. బాబరీ మసీదు ప్రాంతంలోనే రాముడు పుట్టాడన్నది తమ విశ్వాసమని అందువలన బాబరీ మసీదు తాళాలు తీయాలి లేదా తామే పగలగొడతామని తన కనుసన్నలలో పనిచేసే విహెచ్‌పి ఇతర సంస్థలద్వారా ఆందోళనలకు ఆజ్యం పోసింది. బాబరీ వివాదంలో కోర్టు తీర్పులను తాము ఖాతరు చేయబోమని తమ విశ్వాసాలే తమకు ముఖ్యమనే వాదనను ముందుకు తేవటానికి షాబోనో కేసులో ముస్లిం మతశక్తుల వైఖరే స్ఫూర్తి. ఎందుకంటే ఖురాన్‌కు అనుగుణంగా ఆ తీర్పు లేదని వారు వాదించారు. ఇప్పుడు తమ విశ్వాసాలకు, ఆచారలకు, సంప్రదాయాలకు అనుగుణంగా లేనివాటిని అంగీకరించబోమని ఎబుతున్నారు. ఎద్దులను దారుణంగా హింసకు గురిచేసే మొరటు క్రీడ జల్లికట్టుపై సుప్రీం కోర్టు విధించిన నిషేధాన్ని వమ్ము చేస్తూ జల్లికట్టు నిర్వహణకు కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వం అనుమతించటానికి, కాంగ్రెస్‌ హయాంలో షాబానో కేసును నీరు గార్చేందుకు చేసిన చట్ట సవరణకు పెద్ద తేడా ఏముంది ? ముస్లిం ఆచారాలలో కోర్టులు జోక్యం చేసుకోరాదని ఆ మతశక్తులు కోరుతున్నట్లుగానే శబరిమల ఆలయంలో ఎప్పటి నుంచో వస్తున్న మహిళలకు ప్రవేశ నిషేధం కుదరదని కోర్టులు ఎలా నిర్ణయిస్తాయని ఇప్పుడు హిందూ మతశక్తులు ప్రశ్నిస్తున్నాయా లేదా ? అక్కడా అన్యాయానికి గురైందీ మహిళే, ఇక్కడా వివక్షకు గురవుతోందీ మహిళే.

       షాబోనో కేసు తీర్పును నీరు గార్చటానికి కాంగ్రెస్‌ నేతలు చట్టసవరణ చేయటాన్ని నిరసిస్తూ నాడు కేంద్ర మంత్రిగా వున్న ఆరిఫ్‌ మహమ్మద్‌ ఖాన్‌ మంత్రి పదవికి, కాంగ్రెస్‌కూ రాజీనామా చేశారు.నేడు జల్లికట్టు కేసులో అలాంటిదేమీ లేకపోగా జల్లికట్టు క్షత్రియతకు, పౌరుషానికి ప్రతీక అని బిజెపి తమిళనాడు నేత గణేశన్‌ వ్యాఖ్యానించారు. ఓట్ల కోసం, జయలలిత వదిలే నాలుగు సీట్ల కోసం ఎద్దుల రాజకీయాలు తప్ప పౌరుషం పురుషులకేనా మహిళలకు అవసరం లేదా ? నిజానికి బిజెపికి చిత్తశుద్ధి వుంటే తరువాత తాను అధికారానికి వచ్చినపుడు లేదా ప్రస్తుతం పూర్తి మద్దతు వున్న స్దితిలో గానీ సుప్రీంకోర్టు తీర్పులను నీరుగార్చే అధికార దుర్వినియోగానికి తీసుకున్న చర్యలేమిటి ? కాంగ్రెస్‌ కనీసం పార్లమెంట్‌లో చట్టసవరణ చేసింది, మోడీ సర్కార్‌ ఆప్రజాస్వామిక తతంగం కూడా లేకుండా తన అధికారాన్ని వుపయోగించి జల్లికట్టు తీర్పును వమ్ము చేసేందుకు పూనుకుంది. అది తీసుకున్న నిర్ణయం దానికే పరిమితం అవుతుందా ? బిజెపి, సంఘపరివార్‌ సంస్ధలు చేస్తున్న వాదనలు, కేంద్రం తీసుకున్న నిర్ణయం వెనుక అంతకంటే పెద్ద కుట్రకు నాంది పలికినట్లు చెప్పవచ్చు. రామజన్మభూమి ఆలయ వుద్యమం సందర్బంగా విశ్వాసం కోర్టులకు అతీతమని వాదించిన విషయాన్ని గుర్తుకు తెచ్చుకోవాలి. ముఖమంత్రిగా బిజెపి నాయకుడు కల్యాణసింగ్‌ బాబరీ మసీదును రక్షిస్తామని సుప్రీం కోర్టుకు తెలిపారు. సంఘపరివార్‌ సేవకుడిగా దానిని వుల్లంఘించి 1992లో బాబరీ మసీదు కూల్చివేతకు సహకరించాడు. ప్రస్తుతం విశ్వహిందూపరిషత్‌ నేతగా వున్న ప్రవీణ్‌ తొగాడియా రామాలయం విశ్వాసానికి సంబంధించిందని, దాని నిర్మాణం కోసం పార్లమెంట్‌ ప్రతేక చట్టం చేయాలని చెబుతుండగా, సుబ్రమణ్యస్వామి వివాదాస్పద స్థలలోనే నిర్మాణం జరగాలని రెచ్చగొడుతున్నాడు. అందువలన ప్రస్తుతం కోర్టులో వున్న బాబరీ మసీదు వివాదంపై తీర్పు తమకు వ్యతిరేకంగా వస్తే దాన్ని వమ్ము చేసేందుకు అవసరమైతే చట్టం చేయాలని హిందూమతశక్తులు బహిరంగంగానే కోరుతున్నాయి. దీనిపై తీవ్రమైన చర్చ జరగాలా లేదా ? రాజ్యాంగానికి కట్టుబడి వుంటారా? దానికి అతీతంగా విశ్వాసాలు, ఆచారాల పేరుతో దాన్ని నీరుగారుస్తారా ?

   అన్యమతాలపై విమర్శ చేసేటపుడు ఎంతో బాధ్యతా యుతంగా వుండాలి.అది వివాదాలు, కొట్లాటలకు దారితీయకూడదు. అందుకే ఇతర మతాలపై వ్యాఖ్యానించటానికి నిజమైన హిందువు బాధ్యతాయుతంగా ఒకటికి రెండుసార్లు ఆలోచిస్తాడు.అదే మతం తప్ప మరొక అజెండా,జెండా లేనివారు మతోన్మాద చితిపై ఓట్లు దండుకోవాలనుకునేవారి మాదిరి వ్యవహరించరు. అంతే తప్ప దమ్ము, ధైర్యమో మరొకటో లేక కాదు. అలాంటి వారికి ముంబై హైకోర్టు మార్గదర్శకాలు మరోసారి గుర్తు చేయకతప్పదు. ఈ దేశంలో నూటికి 80శాతంపైగా హిందువులు వున్నారు. అందువలన చర్చలో అదేమోతాదులో హిందూయిజంపైనే జరుగుతుంది. పరమత సహనం గల దేశంలో ఏ మతం వారు ఆమతం మంచి చెడ్డలను చర్చిస్తే అది సాధికారికంగా, విశ్వసనీయత వుంటుంది. లేకుంటే ముంబై పరమత న్యాయవాది ఇస్లాం, ముస్లింల గురించి రాసిన పుస్తకం నిషేధం, కోర్టుకు ఎక్కినట్లుగా, కోర్టు చెప్పిన అవాంఛనీయ పర్యవసానాలకు దారితీస్తుంది.

మహారాష్ట్రలో శని ఆలయ ఆంక్షలు

ఈ దేవాలయానికి తొలిసారిగా ఒక మహిళను  అధ్యక్షురాలిగా నియమించటం విశేషం.

     శబరిమల అయ్యప్ప దేవాలయంలోకి మహిళల ప్రవేశంపై విధించిన నిషేధం రాజ్యాంగ విరుద్ధమని దేశ అత్యున్నత న్యాయస్ధానం వ్యాఖ్యానించింది. దానిపై తమ వాదనలను వినిపించేందుకు ఆ దేవస్థాన యాజమాన్యం సిద్దం అవుతోంది. దానిపై విచారణ జరిగి అంతిమ తీర్పు ఎలా వస్తుందో తెలియదు. కానీ మహిళలపట్ల వివక్షకు వ్యతిరేకంగా కోర్టులో దాఖలు చేసిన కేసు దరఖాస్తును వుపసంహరించుకోవాలని లేకుంటే చంపివేస్తామని న్యాయవాదులకు వందలాది బెదిరింపులు వస్తున్నట్లు వార్తలు వస్తున్నాయి. ఇదిలా వుండగా మహారాష్ట్రలోని శని శింగనాపూర్‌లోని శని దేవాలయంలోని దేవత వేదికపైకి తమను అనుమతించాలంటూ ఒక స్వచ్ఛంద సంస్ధ భూమాత బ్రిగేడ్‌ నాయకత్వంలో దాదాపు 400 మంది మహిళలు రిపబ్లిక్‌ దినోత్సవం రోజున దేవాలయ ప్రవేశం చేస్తామని ప్రకటించారు. ఎట్టి పరిస్థితుల్లోనూ అనుమతించేది లేదని సనాతన సంస్థ, హిందూ జనజాగృతి సమితి వాటి అనుబంధ మహిళా విభాగం రాణ రాగిణి శాఖ రెండువేల మంది మహిళలతో అడ్డుకుంటామని ప్రకటించి అక్కడ శాంతి భద్రతల పరిస్ధితులను సృష్టించేందుకు పూనుకున్నాయి. ఈ దేవాలయానికి తొలిసారిగా ఒక మహిళను దేవస్థాన అధ్యక్షురాలిగా నియమించటం విశేషం. ఎప్పటి నుంచో వస్తున్న ఆచారాన్ని వుల్లంఘించటాన్ని తాను ఎట్టి పరిస్థితుల్లోనూ అనుమతించనని ఆమె ప్రకటించారు.

   దేవస్థాన అధ్యక్షురాలు

 మహిళల ప్రవేశాన్ని అడ్డుకుంటున్నవారు చెబుతున్న కధనం ప్రకారం శని ప్రభువు వుగ్ర దేవత. దేవత నుంచి వెలువడే ప్రకంపనలు మహిళలకు హాని చేస్తాయి, అందువలన దేవత మండపం దగ్గరకు వారి ప్రవేశాన్ని నిరోధిస్తున్నారు తప్ప దేవాలయ ప్రాంగణంలో ప్రవేశానికి నిషేధం లేదని, లింగ వివక్ష సమస్యతో కాదని వాదిస్తున్నారు. పురుషులను కూడా మండపం ఎక్కటానికి అనుమతించటం లేదని దూరం నుంచే పూజలను అనుమతిస్తున్నామని, ఎప్పటి నుంచో వస్తున్న ఆచారాన్ని వుల్లంఘించటమంటే భక్తుల మనోభావాలను గాయపరచటమే అని వాదిస్తున్నారు. ఆధ్యాయాత్మిక కారణాలను చూడకుండా కేవలం ప్రచారం ఎత్తుగడగా కొందరు మహిళలను ప్రోత్సహిస్తున్నారని హిందూ జనజాగృతి సమితి ప్రతినిధి సునీల్‌ ఘన్‌వాట్‌ ఆరోపించారు.

      నవంబరు నెలలో ఒక మహిళ శని దేవాలయ మండపంలోకి ప్రవేశించేందుకు ప్రయత్నించగా దేవాలయ ట్రస్టీలు శుద్ధి కార్యక్రమం నిర్వహించారు. దీనిపై రాష్ట్రంలోని పలు మహిళా సంస్థలు తీవ్ర నిరసన వ్యక్తం చేశాయి. ఆ చర్యకు నిరసనగా డిసెంబరులో పూనా కేంద్రంగా పనిచేసే భూమాత రానరాగిణి బ్రిగేడ్‌ అధ్యక్షురాలు తృప్తి దేశాయ్‌ నాయకత్వంలో మరో ముగ్గురు మహిళలు ప్రవేశించేందుకు పూనుకోగా ఆలయ భద్రతా సిబ్బంది అడ్డుకున్నారు. తాము వచ్చే వారం సతారా నుంచి బయలు దేరి రిపబ్లిక్‌ డే నాటికి దేవాలయం వద్దకు చేరుకుంటామని తృప్తి చెప్పారు.అందరికీ సమాన హక్కులు ఇచ్చిన రాజ్యాంగం అమలులోకి వచ్చినందున ఆ రోజును ఎంచుకున్నట్లు చెప్పారు. వివిధ మహిళా సంఘాలు, బృందాలతో సమావేశాలు జరిపి ప్రచారం, చైతన్య కార్యక్రమాలు నిర్వహించనున్నట్లు ఆమె చెప్పారు.

అడ్డు సవాళ్లు తరువాత, ముందు మతాలలోని వివక్ష, వైరుధ్యాలను అంగీకరిస్తారా లేదా ?

ఇక హిందూమతాన్ని మాత్రమే విమర్శిస్తున్నారు అనే వాదన ప్రతి కొత్త తరానికి అది అబ్బ ఏం చెప్పిండు అన్నట్లు కొత్తగా వినసొంపుగా వుండవచ్చుగాని నిజానికి పాతచింతకాయ పచ్చడి.

      జల్లి కట్టు లేకపోతే ఎద్దులు అంతరిస్తాయా ? మహిళలను అనుమతిస్తే అయ్యప్ప బ్రహ్మ చర్యం పోతుందా అనే శీర్షికతో నేను రాసిన అంశాలపై పెద్ద సంఖ్యలో ఆగ్రహం వ్యక్తం చేయటంతో పాటు నాకు మద్దతు పలికిన వారు కూడా వున్నారు. ఆగ్రహం వ్యక్తం చేసిన వారు అనేక ప్రశ్నలు సంధించారు. అందువలన వారికి మాయాబజార్‌ సినిమాలో చెప్పినట్లు వీరతాళ్లు వేద్దాం. అయితే వాణిజ్య ప్రకటనలలో చిన్న నక్షత్రం వేసి దానికి షరతులు వర్తిస్తాయి అన్నట్లుగానే గానే వీరూ ఆ షరతులకు లోబడే వీరతాళ్లు  వేసుకొనేందుకు అర్హులు. నాపై ఆగ్రహం వ్యక్తం చేసిన వారు చేసిన ఆరోపణ లేదా విమర్శలు ఏమిటి ? హిందూయిజాన్ని సులభంగా విమర్శిస్తారు, ఇతర మతాలు ముఖ్యంగా ఇస్లామును ఏమీ అనలేరు, వారిని విమర్శించటానికి లేదా వారి పేరు ఎత్తటానికి దమ్ము, ధైర్యాలు లేవు, హిందూయిజాన్ని విమర్శించటం ఒక ఫ్యాషన్‌గా మారింది. హిందువులు సహనశీలురు కాబట్టే ఇలాంటి వారి ఆటలు సాగుతున్నాయి, ఇస్లామిక్‌ దేశంలో ఇలా అని బతగ్గలరా ? ఇలా సాగాయి.విమర్శించిన వారందరూ సంఘపరివార్‌ తాలిబాన్‌ హిందూత్వ వాదులు కాదు, వారి వాదనల ప్రభావానికిలోనై ప్రశ్నించినంత మాత్రాన వారిని, కరడు గట్టిన వారినీ ఒకే గాటన కట్టటం లేదు.

       మన దేశంలో అభివృద్ధి చెందిన వాటిలో తర్కశాస్త్రం ఒకటి. ఇది శాస్త్రీయమైనది, దీనిలో గతి తార్కిక విధానం అంటే తర్కము, హేతువు వుండాలి. గతి తార్కిక విధానము అనగానే ఇదేదో కమ్యూనిస్టుల పదజాలం అని కొందరికి తేళ్లు జెర్రులు పాకినట్లు వుండవచ్చు. వారు పుట్టక ముందే కొన్ని వేల సంవత్సరాల నాడే భారత సమాజంలో వుంది. అసలు తర్కము, హేతువు నుంచే సమాజం ఇంతగా పురోగమించింది. అవేమీ లేకపోతే మనం ఇంకా ఆకులు చుట్టుకొనే దశలోనో అంతకు పూర్వ దశలోనో వుండే వాళ్లం. తర్కాన్ని ఎంతగానో అభివృద్ధి చేసి ప్రాచుర్యంలోకి తెచ్చిన వారు లోకాయతులు. వేదాలను, వైదిక క్రతువులను రెండున్నర-మూడువేల సంవత్సరాల నాడే వ్యతిరేకించి వాటి ప్రామాణికతను సవాలు చేసిన హేతువాదులు వారు . వారిని చార్వాకులు అని కూడా పిలిచారు. వేదాలను సమర్ధించే శక్తులు వారిని భౌతికంగా అంతం చేసి వారి తర్కశాస్త్రాన్ని నాశనం చేసి తరువాతి తరాలకు అందకుండా చేశారు. వారిని తిడుతూ లేక విమర్శిస్తూ రాసిన అంశాలను బట్టి లోకాయతుల గురించి మనకు ఇప్పుడు తెలుస్తున్నది. అందువలన నేను రాసిన దానిని తప్పుపట్టిన వారు ముందు వుద్రేకాన్ని తగ్గించుకొని మన పురాతన గతి తార్కిక పద్దతిలో ఆలోచించాలి. తర్కశాస్త్రంలో ఒకరు ఏదైనా ఒక అంశాన్ని లేవనెత్తితే దాన్ని వుత్తర పక్షం అంటారు. రెండవవారు దానికి సమాధానం చెబితే దానిని పూర్వపక్షం అంటారు. రెండు వాదనలు విని ఏది సరైనదో తేలుస్తారు. అంటే సరైన వాదన చేసిన వారిని రెండోవారు అంగీకరించాలి. ఇటీవలి కాలంలో కొందరు అతి తెలివి ప్రదర్శిస్తూ వాదనలకు దిగి ఓడిపోయి రెండోవారిని అంగీకరించకుండా మీరు ఎన్నయినా చెప్పండి ఇది నా విశ్వాసం, నమ్మకం , మనోభావం దీనిని నేను అంగీకరించను అని అడ్డం తిరుగుతున్నారు లేదా అసలు తర్కానికే సిద్ధం కారు .ఇలాంటి వారు వీరతాళ్లు వేసుకొనేందుకు అనర్హులు. అలాంటి వారితో తర్కించటం కంఠశోష తప్ప శుద్ద దండగ. గాంధీలు పుట్టినపుడు గాడ్సేలు లేకుండా ఎలా వుంటారు అన్నట్లుగా సమాజంలో హేతుబద్దంగా ఆలోచించే వారే మెజారిటీగా వున్నందున వారి కోసమైనా కొన్ని విషయాలను చర్చించుకోవటం అవసరం. వారు వున్నారు కాబట్టే సమాజం ముందుకు పోతోంది.

      ముంబై హైకోర్టు 2010 జనవరి మొదటివారంలో ఒక ముఖ్యమైన తీర్పును వెలువరించింది. ఇస్లాం, హిందూ, క్రిస్టియన్‌ ఏ మతాన్ని అయినా భావప్రకటనా స్వేచ్ఛ అనే ప్రాధమిక హక్కు కింద విమర్శించటం భారత దేశంలో అనుమతించదగినదే అయితే అ విమర్శ చిత్తశుద్దితో లేదా సైద్ధాంతికమైనదిగా వుండాలి తప్ప విద్వేషాన్ని రెచ్చగొట్ట కూదదు అని ఒక పుస్తకంపై తలెత్తిన వివాదం సందర్భంగా కోర్టు చెప్పింది. ఇస్లాం గురించి ముంబై న్యాయవాది ఒకరు రాసిన పుస్తకంలోని అంశాలు అభ్యంతరకరంగా వున్నాయని మహారాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం ఆ పుస్తకంపై నిషేధం విధించింది. అది తన భావప్రకటనా స్వేచ్ఛకు విఘాతమంటూ రచయిత కోర్టులో సవాలు చేశారు. కోర్టు ఆ నిషేధం సరైనదే అని సమర్ధించింది. న్యాయమూర్తులు రంజనా దేశాయ్‌, డివై చంద్రచూడ్‌, ఆర్‌ఎస్‌ మోహిత్‌లతో కూడిన బెంచ్‌ దీనిని విచారించింది. ఆరోగ్యకరమైన విమర్శ ఆలోచనలను రేకెత్తించేదిగా వుండాలి, చర్చను ప్రోత్సహించాలి ఒక నిర్ధారణకు వచ్చేందుకు తోడ్పడాలి, కానీ విమర్శ నిందలు వేసేదిగా వివిధ సామాజిక తరగతుల మధ్య విద్వేషాన్ని సృష్టించేదిగా వుండకూడదు, అది వివేకవంతమైన సంప్రదింపులకు దారితీయాలి అని న్యాయమూర్తులు పేర్కొన్నారు. రచయిత తాను అనుకుంట్నుది సరైనదని చెప్పవచ్చు, ఒక వేళ అది తప్పయితే దానికి అతనిని శిక్షించకూడదు, కానీ చూడాల్సిందేమంటే ఇస్లాం ఏం చెప్పిందో తెలుసుకోవటానికి, దానిని బయటకు వెల్లడించటానికి రచయిత చిత్తశుద్దితో వ్యవహరించాడా లేదా అనేది చూడాలి. ఈ కేసులో ఇస్లాంపై విమర్శలు మరియు భారతీయ ముస్లింలపై చేసిన అవమానకరమైన వ్యాఖ్యలు సైద్దాంతికమైనవి కాదు అని కోర్టు స్పష్టం చేసింది. అభ్యంతరకరంగా వున్న భాగాలను తొలగించాలన్న సూచనలను రచయిత నిరాకరించారు. ఇంటర్నెట్‌ యుగంలో పుస్తకాన్ని నిషేధించటం కాలం చెల్లింది, అర్ధం లేనిది అని రచయిత వాదించటం పూర్తిగా అభ్యంతరకరమని కోర్టు పేర్కొన్నది. భారతీయ ముస్లింలు హిందువులందరినీ మతమార్పిడి చేయాలని చూస్తున్నారని, హిందూ దేవాలయాలు, మహిళలపై దాడులు చేస్తున్నారంటూ రచయిత చేసిన వ్యాఖ్యలు జనాన్ని హింసాకాండకు రెచ్చగొట్టవచ్చు లేదా హింస, శతృత్వాన్ని లేదా ద్వేషాన్ని పెంచవచ్చని కోర్టు వ్యాఖ్యానించింది.

       అందువలన ఎవరైనా ఏమతం గురించైనా చేసే వ్యాఖ్యల వెనుక వున్న వుద్ధేశ్యాలు, లక్ష్యాలు ఏమిటో తెలియనంతటి స్థితిలో సమాజం లేదు. అయితే కొందరు ఒక లక్ష్యంతో చేసే వ్యాఖ్యలను మరికొందరు పర్యవసానాల గురించి ఆలోచించకుండా వాటిని తమ అభిప్రాయాలుగా స్వంతం చేసుకొని మాట్లాడుతున్నారు. విమర్శ చేస్తే వారు సహించరు. అందువలన వారిని కూడా ఎదుటి వారు ఏదో ఒక పక్షంగా భావించాల్సిన పరిస్థితులు నేడు దాపురించాయి. ముందే చెప్పుకున్నట్లు ఇస్లాంను విమర్శించటానికి దమ్ము, ధైర్యం లేదని చేసే వ్యాఖ్యలు, సవాళ్లు ఈ కోవకు చెందినవే. వీరు ముందు ఒకటి స్పష్టం చేయాలి. రాజ్యాంగాన్ని అంగీకరించి దానికి అనుగుణుంగా నడుచుకుంటారా లేదా ? మనది మతరాజ్యం కాదని అంగీకరిస్తారా లేదా ? భిన్నాభి ప్రాయాన్ని సహిస్తారా కుదరదంటారా ? మతరాజ్యాలతో పోల్చుకోవటం అంటే మనం కూడా ఆ బాట పట్టాలని చెబుతున్నారా ? ఏమతానికి చెందిన వారైనా అసలు మతాలలోని చెడు లేదా అవాంఛనీయ పోకడల మీద చేసే విమర్శలను సహిస్తారా లేదా అంగీకరిస్తారా లేదా ? మతాలలోనే అంతర్గతంగా వైరుధ్యాలు, మారాల్సిన అంశాలు వున్నాయని ఒప్పుకుంటారా లేదా ?

      వుదాహరణకు హిందూ మతంలో మహిళల పట్ల వివక్ష వుంది అనే విమర్శ చేస్తే వెంటనే వస్తున్న ప్రతివాదన ఏమిటి ? హిందూ మతం గురించి చెప్పేవారు మహిళలకు మసీదులలో ప్రవేశంపై ఆంక్షల గురించి, క్రైస్తవంలోని అంశాలపై మాట్లాడరెందుకు అని ప్రశ్నిస్తున్నారు. ఆ మతాల గురించి విమర్శిస్తే మావి మైనారిటీ అసలు నూటికి 80 మందిగా , మా మతాల కంటే ఎన్నో వేల సంవత్సరాల ముందు నుంచి వునికిలో వున్న హిందూ మతం గురించి ఆలోచించండి అని వారు అంటారు. వీటన్నింటినీ చూసినపుడు ఏ ఒక్కమతావలంబలకులూ తమ మతంలో వివక్ష వుందని అంగీకరించటం లేదు, వున్న దానిని సమర్ధించటానికి పూనుకుంటున్నారు, తప్పించుకోవటానికి ఇతర మతాల గురించి అడ్డు సవాళ్లు విసురుతున్నారు. ఓట్లకు మతాలను వాడుకోవటం, అందుకోసం చివరికి కొట్లాటలను కూడా సృష్టిస్తున్న ఈ రోజుల్లో ఒక మతానికి చెందిన వారు ఇతర మతాల మంచి చెడ్డల గురించి చెబితే వాటిని సహృదయంతో స్వీకరించే పరిస్థితులు లేవు. అవసరమైతే వివక్ష, మూఢనమ్మకాలు, సంస్కరణల వంటి విషయాల గురించి మనం వాదులాడు కోవద్దు, విమర్శించేవారిపై వుమ్మడిగా దాడి చేద్దాం అని జెఎసి గా ఏర్పడినా ఆశ్చర్యం లేదు. మతం జనం పాలిట మత్తుమందు అని కమ్యూనిస్టులు చెబుతున్నారు. అలా అన్నందుకే కమ్యూనిజం క్రైస్తవానికి, ఇస్లాంకు వ్యతిరేకం అని ఆ మతాలు జనం మెదళ్లలో నూరిపోస్తున్నాయి. మన దేశంలో కూడా మెజారిటీ మతశక్తులూ అదే చేస్తున్నాయి. అందువలన ఇప్పుడున్న స్థితిలో ముందు ఏ మతానికి చెందిన వారు ఆ మతంలోని అవాంఛనీయ పోకడలను ప్రశ్నించాలి. ఏ మతం వారైనా ఇతర మతాలకు చెందిన వారు కావాలని రెచ్చగొట్టే వ్యాఖ్యలకు రెచ్చిపోవద్దు. వాటిని కొన్ని శక్తులు దురుద్ధేశ్యాలు, జనం మధ్య సామరస్యతను చెడగొట్టేందుకు , రోజువారీ సమస్యలపై ఐక్యం కాకుండా అడ్డుకొనేందుకు విభజించి పాలించే ఎత్తుగడలలో భాగంగా అనేక అంశాలను ముందుకు తెస్తున్నాయి. అనేక మంది వాటికి ప్రభావితులౌతున్నారు, సామాజిక మీడియాలో అవాంఛనీయ పోకడలు, వ్యాఖ్యలతో వాతావరణాన్ని కలుషితం చేస్తున్నారు.

      ఇక హిందూమతాన్ని మాత్రమే విమర్శిస్తున్నారు అనే వాదన ప్రతి కొత్త తరానికి అది అబ్బ ఏం చెప్పిండు అన్నట్లు కొత్తగా వినసొంపుగా వుండవచ్చుగాని నిజానికి పాతచింతకాయ పచ్చడి. అరిగిపోయిన గ్రామఫోను రికార్డు వంటిదే. దాన్ని గురించి తరువాత పరిశీలించుదాం ?

ఈ వారంలో జల్లికట్టు, శబరిమల ఆలయంలో యువతుల ప్రవేశ నిషేధంపై వెలువడిన కోర్టు తీర్పులు, నిర్ణయాలు సంచలనం కలిగించాయి.కోర్టు తీర్పులపై ఎప్పుడూ ఏకాభిప్రాయం వుండదు. గెలిచిన వాడు న్యాయమైన తీర్పు అంటే ఓడిన వాడు అన్యాయం అని ఆక్రోశిస్తాడు.ఏ తీర్పు అయినా అవి వ్యక్తులు లేదా ఒక సంస్ధ వివాదాలలో అయినా ఇచ్చిన తీర్పులు మెజారిటీ ప్రయోజనాలను కాపాడుతుందా లేదా ? సమాజాన్ని ముందుకు తీసుకుపోయేందుకు దారి చూపుతుందా లేదా అన్నదే గీటురాయిగా వుండాలి. ఆ విధంగా చూసుకున్నపుడు కొన్ని సందర్బాలలో కోర్టు తీర్పులు కూడా తిరోగామిగా వుండవచ్చు. అన్నింటినీ ఒకేగాటన కట్టలేము. అందువలన దేనికి దానిని విడిగా చూడాలి.

ఈ ప్రాతిపదికన చూసినపుడు జల్లికట్టు, శబరిమల కేసులలో నిర్ణయాలను పురోగమనవాదులు హర్షిస్తుండగా తిరోగమనవాదులు చిందులు వేస్తున్నారు. విపరీత భావాలు, ఆచరణ సాధ్యం కాని సంస్ధగా సుప్రీం కోర్టు మారిపోతున్నదని కొందరు తీవ్ర వ్యాఖ్యలు చేశారు. శబరిమల ఆలయంలోకి మహిళలను ఎందుకు రానివ్వటంలేదో చెప్పాలని, నిషేధించటం రాజ్యాంగ విరుద్దమని సుప్రీంకోర్టు దేవస్ధాన అధికారులను ప్రశ్నించింది. యువ న్యాయవాదులు వేసిన పదేళ్లనాటి ఒక కేసును కోర్టు విచారిస్తున్నది.ఎప్పటి నుంచో వస్తున్న సంప్రదాయం, ఆచారం, మనోభావాలను గాయపరచినట్లు , వాటిని ఒక్కరాత్రిలో మార్చివేయలేమని చెప్పటం తప్ప ఎలాంటి హేతుబద్దమైన సమాధానం మహిళల నిషేధాన్ని సమర్ధించేవారి వద్ద లేదు.

అయ్యప్ప స్వామి బ్రహ్మచారి కనుక 10-50 మధ్య వయస్సు వున్న మహిళలు రుతుక్రమంలో వుంటారు కనుక వారిని ఆలయంలోకి అనుమతించటం’పాపం’ అని బోర్డు వాదిస్తున్నది. గతంలో అధికారంలో వున్న సిపిఎం నాయకత్వంలోని ఎల్‌డిఎఫ్‌ ప్రభుత్వమే కోర్టులో అఫిడవిట్‌ దాఖలు చేసి దీనికంతటికీ కారణమైందని బోర్టు అధ్యక్షుడు ప్రయార్‌ గోపాల్‌కృష్ణన్‌ ఆరోపించారు. తిరువనంతపురంలోని అట్టుకల్‌ దేవీ ఆలయంలోకి పొంగలా పూజ చేసేందుకు పురుషులను అనుమతించరని, ఇలాగే ప్రతి దేవాలయానికి ఒక్కొక్క ఆచారం వుంటుందని, ఇది లింగవివక్ష సమస్య కాదు, సాంప్రదాయం అని వాదించారు. కోర్టు వీటిని పరిగణనలోకి తీసుకోకుండా వ్యవహరించిందని విమర్శించారు. మహిళలను అనుమతించాలా లేదా అనేది భక్తులు నిర్ణయిస్తారని, తమ హక్కుల గురించి మహిళలు తేల్చుకుంటారు తప్ప కోర్టులపని కాదనే ఘనులు కూడా తయారయ్యారు. యధాతధ స్థితిని కొనసాగించాలని కోరాలని కాంగ్రెస్‌ నాయకత్వంలోని యుడిఎఫ్‌ ప్రభుత్వం నిర్ణయించింది. ఎప్పటి నుంచో వున్న పాత ఆచారాన్ని తాము మార్చబోమని దేవాదాయశాఖ మంత్రి శివకుమార్‌ ప్రకటించారు. విశ్వహిందూ పరిషత్‌ వంటి సంస్ధలు ఇంక సరేసరి.

ఈ సమస్యపై కోర్టు తీరును వామపక్ష ప్రజాతంత్ర కూటమి స్వాగతించింది. దీనిపై ఆరోగ్యకరమైన చర్చ జరగాలని అభిప్రాయ పడింది. తిరువాన్కూరు మాజీ రాజకుటుంబానికి చెందిన మహిళలు దేవాలయాన్ని సందర్శించినట్లు గట్టి ఆధారాలున్నాయని సిపిఎం నాయకుడైన మాజీ దేవాదాయ శాఖ మంత్రి సుధాకరన్‌ చెప్పారు. మహిళలు దేవాలయంలోకి ప్రవేశిస్తే దేవుడి బ్రహ్మచర్యం పోతుందని వాదించటంలో అర్ధం లేదని ఇదొక సామాజిక రుగ్మత అని కోర్టులో పిటీషన్‌ దాఖలు చేసిన వారు వాదిస్తున్నారు. గురువాయూరు శ్రీకృష్ణ దేవాలయంలోకి ఇతర మతాలకు చెందిన వారికి ప్రవేశం లేదు, అయ్యప్పకు అటువంటి నిషేధం లేదు.వావర్‌ స్వామి అనే ఒక ముస్లిం అయ్యప్పకు ఎంతో ఇష్టమైన భక్తుడిగా ప్రాచుర్యంలో వుండటంతో అయ్యప్ప దేవాలయానికి వెళ్లే ముందు వావర్‌ స్వామి మసీదును కూడా భక్తులు సందర్శిస్తారు. హిందువులు పూజించేవారిలో హనుమాన్‌ కూడా ఒకరు. ఆయనా బ్రహ్మచారే. ఆయనకూ దేవాలయాలున్నాయి.వాటిలో మహిళల ప్రవేశంపై ఎలాంటి నిషేధం లేదు, ఆయన బ్రహ్మచర్యం పోయిన దాఖలాలు లేవు. మరి అయ్యప్పకే ఆంక్షలు ఎందుకు?

2006లో కన్నడ సినీనటి జయమాల తాను కుర్రవయస్సులో వున్నపుడు అయ్యప్పస్వామి దేవాలయాన్ని సందర్శించినట్లు ప్రకటించటంతో మహిళలపై నిషేధం వెలుగులోకి వచ్చింది. జయమాల అలాంటి ప్రకటన చేసి కోట్లాది మంది భక్తుల మనోభావాలను గాయపరిచిందంటూ కేసును దాఖలు చేశారు.ఆమెకు మద్దతుగా అనేక మంది ముందుకు వచ్చారు. ఆ వుదంతం జరిగిన సమయంలోనే దేవాలయ నిర్ణయాన్ని ప్రశ్నిస్తూ యువ న్యాయవాదులు సుప్రీం కోర్టులో కేసును దాఖలు చేశారు. నిషేధం రాజ్యాంగ బద్దం కాదని కోర్టు అభిప్రాయ పడటంతో ఈనెల 18న తమ వాదనలు వినిపిస్తూ దేవస్ధానం బోర్డు, కేరళ ప్రభుత్వం కూడా పిటీషన్లు దాఖలు చేయనున్నాయి.

రెండవ అంశం జల్లికట్టుపై నిషేధం. సుప్రీం కోర్టు విధించిన నిషేధాన్ని పూర్వపక్షం చేస్తూ కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వం ఈ మొరటు క్రీడను అనుమతిస్తూ ఆదేశాలు జారీ చేసింది. దానిపై సుప్రీం కోర్టులో పిటీషన్‌ దాఖలు కావటంతో జల్లికట్టును అనుమతించరాదని మరోసారి కోర్టు ఆదేశించింది.అయ్యప్ప ఆలయంలోకి మహిళలపై నిషేధం లింగవివక్ష సమస్య కాదని వితండ వాదం చేస్తున్నట్లుగానే జల్లికట్టులో ఎద్దుల పట్ల క్రూరంగా వ్యవహరించటం లేదని, అసలు ఇలాంటి పోటీలు, క్రీడలు లేనట్లయితే మన దేశంలో ఎద్దులను పెంచేవారే వుండరని, అసలా జాతే అంతరించి పోతుందనే అర్ధం లేని వాదనలు ముందుకు తెస్తున్నారు. జల్లికట్టును ఒక సాంస్కృతిక అంశంగా చూడాలని, మానవ ప్రాణాలు ఒక సమస్యగా తయారైతే తప్ప ఇలాంటి అంశాలపై తీర్పులు చెప్పటం కోర్టుల పని కాదని చెబుతున్నారు. ఒక వేళ దీనిని క్రూరమైన చర్యగా పరిగణిస్తే గుర్రపు పందాలలో గుర్రాలు కూడా గాయపడతాయని వాటిని నిషేధిస్తారా, ఇతర జంతు వధలను కూడా నిషేధించాల్సి వుంటుందన్న వాదనలు ముందుకు తెస్తున్నారు. క్రూరత్వ నిరోధ చట్టం మానవులు తయారు చేసింది తప్ప మరొకటి కాదని, రాజ్యాంగంలోని మౌలిక హక్కుల వంటిది కాదని కూడా అతి తెలివిని ప్రదర్శిస్తున్నారు.కోర్టు వాదనల ప్రకారమైతే స్పెయిన్‌లో ఎద్దులతో యుద్ధాన్ని, అమెరికాలో కృతజ్ఞతల దినం రోజు టర్కీల వధను కూడా నిషేధించాల్సి వుంటుందని చివరికి మాంసం మానేసి పండ్లు, కూరగాయలు తినాల్సి వుంటుందని చెబుతున్నారు.అలాంటి వాదనలను ముందుకు తెచ్చేవారు ముందు వాటిపై తమ అభిప్రాయం ఏమిటో చెప్పకుండా అడ్డు సవాళ్లు విసిరితే కుదరదు. సంప్రదాయం, ఆచారాలు మనోభావాల పేరుతో రెచ్చగొట్టటం గాక ఆరోగ్యకరమైన చర్చ జరిపితే ప్రయోజనం వుంటుంది. జైనులు నడిచేటపుడు తమ కాలికింద పడి జీవులు ఎక్కడ నలిగిపోతాయో అని రోడ్లు వూడ్చుకుంటూ పోయిన తరువాతే నడుస్తారు.మరి వారు మాంసం కోసం జంతువధ చేయటం తమ మనోభావాలను గాయపరచటం కనుక కుదరదు, మా సాంప్రదాయం కాదు అంటే కుదురుతుందా ?

Sitaram Yechury

[This text is based on the speech delivered by Sitaram Yechury, General Secretary of CPI(M)  at the valedictory function of the 83rd Sivagiri Pilgrimage Celebrations on January 1, 2016 at Kerala.]

It is, indeed, an honour to be here at Sivagiri. My heartfelt thanks for being invited to share some thoughts with all of you in the concluding session of the 83rd Sivagiri Pilgrimage celebrations. It is, indeed, a very new and an appropriate way to begin the new year. A Happy New Year to all of you.

I belong to a generation that grew up on the values propagated by Srinarayana Guru – `the oneness of humanity’, with no social barriers on the grounds of caste, religion, region etc.  The slogan of `one caste, one religion, one god’ is an elevated expression of humanism which recognizes the value of a human being  as being supreme. A value that recognizes all human beings as being equal, irrespective of all social divisions.  This universality of oneness of humanity, in a sense, crystallizes the finest elements of  rational thought and philosophy that emerged in the course of the advance of human civilization in these lands.  As “different rivers flow through different courses to merge in the ocean”, so do different human beings through the practice of individual beliefs and faith eventually merge with humanity as a whole. This is humanism of the highest variety.

Such humanism has a strong resonance with the Communist philosophy and worldview.  The overriding concern of Marxism is humanism.  In fact, Karl Marx had once said, “Nothing human is alien to me”.  It is the pursuit of the simple question of what constitutes the real freedom of a human being and his consequent liberation, Marx proceeded to reject the Hegelian idea of the revolution of the mind as articulated by Feuerbach, during his time, to come to a conclusion of seminal importance.  This was: consciousness of a human being is determined by the social conditions and not vice a versa. “It is not the consciousness of men that determines their being, but on the contrary their social being that determines their consciousness”.

Marxism’s focus on changing the concrete conditions of material existence, as the basic pre-requisite for human liberation, emerges from this understanding and hence Marx’s own scientific study on the real living conditions of the people and his consequent dissection of capitalism.

It, indeed, sounds as a strange paradox that a practitioner of Marxism, a Communist foot soldier, a confirmed atheist has been invited to be here as a part of these pilgrimage celebrations.  A  great deal of controversy has always existed regarding the Marxist understanding of religion. The popular perception is the normally out of context quotation that “religion is the opium of the people”. In fact, deliberately, the passage in which this statement finds place is never quoted in the full. Marx had stated :”Religious distress is at the same time the expression of real distress and the protest against real distress. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of the heartless world, just as it is the spirit of the spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people”.

Religion, is the opium in the sense that it is as potent as opium in transporting human beings to an illusory world. For a human being who is oppressed, religion provides the escape for  relief, it provides  a “heart in a heartless world, a spirit in a spiritless situation.” This is the strength and power of religion. It is like opium that the people are fed, to lull themselves into submission, robbing them of their inherent potential to change the real world, and hence, remain in conditions which appear outside of both their comprehension and control.

Marxism does not attack religion per se. It’s attack is on the conditions that give rise to the conditions that perpetuate the hold of religion on the people.  The point is to change the real world; to  transform the comforts of an illusory world into concrete reality. Therefore, as a Communist, we can assure you that the CPI(M) will be the foremost upholder of every individual’s right to his/her choice of their faith and their right to maintain their beliefs and propagate them.  We will defend,  till the last breath, this right of the individual choice and protect the faith of every individual. It, therefore, necessarily follows that we shall also protect everybody against any attempt to interfere into the rights of individual liberty of faith by any body of thought or action.  This is precisely what the communal forces attempt to do today.  The CPI(M)’s opposition to communalism is, hence, integral to both its philosophy and practice.

This growth of rabid communal polarization that we see around us today runs completely in contradiction with the body of thought and action that the Guru has bequeathed to us.   This rich legacy and the philosophical activities that the Guru undertook had heralded a movement for social renaissance in Kerala.  Remember, Swami Vivekananda had once described the Kerala society as a `mad house’ of casteism.  The Guru, through his philosophy of oneness of humanity,  spread the indomitable values of equality and humanism.  Kerala was a society where caste prejudices went beyond even the obnoxious practice of untouchability. In Kerala, there was the practice of unseability. Comrade EMS Namboodiripad used to tell us that in his childhood, it was not unusual to see some `unfortunate’ human beings carrying a bell around their neck whose sound would warn the  upper castes, to take a different path!

It was the social renaissance heralded by the Guru, amongst others, that has transformed this society into one with the most progressive values in the country today. In the process, Kerala society has achieved such advances in its human development indices that it matches and, in some cases, outstrips the standards existing in the developed capitalist countries today. In the field of literacy, education, gender equality and other social parameters, Kerala proudly stands at the top on the  rest of India.

The Guru used spirituality as a propelling force for upward social mobility of the people. In this process, he developed a unique combination of materialism and spiritualism, propagating The Buddha’s preachings of the control over the Body, Word, Mind, Food and Deed.   The consecration of the Shiva Lingam in 1888 – the Aruvippuram Prathishta – remains a landmark that has gone way beyond being a symbolic gesture.

Yet another resonance with Marxist philosophy is the Guru’s emphasis on “freedom through education, strength through organisation, economic independence through industry”.  In a sense, this brings me to the point of urging all of you to explore further a thought: Spiritualism is  not to be confined within the boundaries of religion or religiosity.  Of course, there is religious spiritualism which could also be call Theistic spiritualism. On the other hand, there is also an Atheistic spiritualism. Here, spiritualism is understood as the elevation of human  consciousness to the levels of refined humanism.  Such elevation of human consciousness can be achieved as much by a materialist philosophy as it can be through a Theistic theology.  (This is a tautological term, but I am using it only to emphasise the point.)

The Guru’s philosophy spread far and wide beyond the confines of Kerala. I am told that Mahatma Gandhi came here thrice during our freedom movement.  Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore came to meet the Guru in 1922. This surely was a meeting of minds.  Tagore had by then penned the Nobel Prize winning immortal lines to awaken India: “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high; Where knowledge is free; Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;”.

The Guru’s teachings and personal example appear to be not merely relevant but more necessary to meet the challenges before us today.  On the one hand, the material basis of  existence for the vast mass of our people and the country, as a consequence of embracing the neo-liberal policy trajectory by the Indian ruling classes, is deteriorating. Unless material needs are satisfied, the growth of spiritualism leading to social renaissance and, therefore, to cultural renaissance would be simply impossible.  The economic policies followed  by the current government at the Centre and, to a large extent, by the government in Kerala, only buttress such material regression of our people’s lives.  These policies need to be resisted and reversed.  This is one focus of CPI(M)’s activities today.

On the other hand, the CPI(M)’s other focus is against the growing communal polarization and the vicious pursuit of consolidating the Hindutva  communal vote bank politics which is leading to severe ruptures in our society that can well destroy the unity and integrity of India.  Under the present Central government, both these aspects of anti-people economic reforms and communal polarization constitute its singular agenda.  In the process, the communal forces even make an attempt to forcibly appropriate the Guru’s philosophy and legacy.

This, simply, cannot be allowed. Such efforts, in particular, have to be defeated in order to carry ourselves to higher levels of social and material existence as envisaged and propagated by the Guru.  The efforts to replace the  rich Indian history with Hindu theology and the evolution of the syncretic Indian philosophy with a monolithic Hindu theology will have to be resisted and defeated.

I wish the Srinarayana Guru Mutt all success in its efforts to relentlessly continue to propagate the Guru’s philosophy  and vision of the `oneness of humanity’ and not permit any effort at hijacking this rich legacy to serve the narrow ends of communal forces.

పేర్లకీ, పుకార్లకీ కేంద్రంగా ఫేస్‌బుక్‌

ఈ మధ్య ఫేస్‌బుక్‌లో ‘ పోప్‌ సంచలన వ్యాఖ్యలు…’అనే శీర్షిక కింద ఒకరు ఒక పోస్టు పెట్టారు. దానిలో ఇలా వుంది.’ నాకు ఏసుక్రీస్తు మీద నమ్మకం లేదు, కేవలం ఈ సుఖానికి బానిసలా గడుపుతున్నాను, మళ్లీ జన్మంటూ వుంటే భారతీయుడిగా హిందువుగా పుట్టాలని వుంది….పోప్‌, పోప్‌ వ్యాఖ్యల్ని సమర్ధించిన బ్రిటన్‌ ప్రధాని, తాను కూడా అదే కోరుకుంటున్నానని వెల్లడి ‘

దీనికి సంబంధించిన ఆధారాల న్యూస్‌ లింక్‌ తెలియచేయమని,లేనట్లయితే పోస్టు పెట్టిన వారిని హైదరాబాద్‌ ఎర్రగడ్డ లేదా విశాఖ ఆసుపత్రులలో చికిత్సకోసం చేర్చాల్సి వుంటుందని వ్యాఖ్యానించాను. దానికి సదరు వ్యక్తి ఇంక వేరే చోట్ల పిచ్చాసుపత్రులు లేవా, నేను ఈ పోస్టు పెట్టటానికి కారణం నేను ఏ మతానికీ మద్దతు ఇవ్వటం లేదు అని చెప్పటానికే అని ప్రత్యుత్తర మిచ్చారు. పిచ్చి ముదిరి రోకలిని తలకు చుట్టమన్నాడట వెనకటి కెవడో . ప్రశ్నకు సమాధానానికి ఏమైనా పొంతన వుందా ? ఫేస్‌బుక్‌, వాట్సప్‌ సామాజిక మాధ్యమం ఏదైనా కానివ్వండి ఎలాంటి ఆధారాలు, హేతువు లేకుండా సమాచారం పేరుతో ఏదిబడితే దానిని పోస్టు చేస్తున్నారు.చాకుతో నోటిని తీపి చేసే మామిడి కాయలు కోసుకోవచ్చు,జీవితాలను అంతం చేసే మెడకాయలనూ వుత్తరించవచ్చు. సామాజిక మీడియాను కూడా ఇలాగే దుర్వినియోగం చేస్తున్నారు. కేవలం పతాకశీర్షికను చూసి లైక్‌ లేదా షేర్‌ చేయటం ఒక ఫ్యాషన్‌గా మారిపోయింది.

నేను ఏ మతానికీ మద్దతు ఇవ్వటం లేదని చెప్పటానికి ఈ పోస్టు అన్న సమాధానం తప్పించుకోవటానికి ఆపద్ధర్మంగా ఏదో ఒకటి చెప్పటం తప్ప దానిలో నిజాయితీ లేదు.ఇలాంటి తప్పుడు సమాచారాన్ని ప్రచారంలో పెట్టేది మతోన్మాదులు తప్ప మరొకరు కాదు. అది మెజారిటీ లేదా మైనారిటీ ఎవరైనా కావచ్చు. పోప్‌, బ్రిటన్‌ ప్రధాని వంటి పెద్దల పేరుతో ఇలాంటి ఆధారం లేని అభూత కల్పనలు ఆపాదించి చౌకబారు ప్రచారాలు చేస్తున్నారు. మతం,కులం, ప్రాంతం వంటి కొన్ని అంశాలు వుద్రిక్తతలను రెచ్చగొట్టటానికి జనం మెదళ్లను కలుషితం చేయటానికి గాను పని గట్టుకొని ప్రచారం చేయటానికి మతశక్తులు పెద్ద యంత్రాంగాలనే నిర్వహిస్తున్నారు. వాటిని గమనించలేకపోతే సామాజిక మీడియాలో తమపేరు పదే పదే చూసుకోవాలి లేదా కనిపించాలని కోరుకొనే వారు పోప్‌ వ్యాఖ్యల వంటి అవాస్తవాన్ని బాధ్యతా రహితంగా లేదా తమకు తెలియకుండానే మండుతున్న మంటకు ఒక చితిని చేర్చటం తప్ప మరొకటి కాదు. దీనివలన ప్రజలకు ఒక ఆయుధంగా వున్న ఈ మీడియాకు ఇప్పటికే విస్వసనీయత తగ్గిపోయింది. ఫేస్‌బుక్‌ అంటే గర్ల్‌ఫ్రెండ్స్‌తో పిచ్చాపాటీ, పోసుకోలు కబుర్ల వేదికగా మారిందనేది అనేక మంది అభిప్రాయం, అలాంటివారందరూ క్రమంగా తమ ఖాతాలను మూసివేస్తున్నారు.ఎదుటివారి మీద బురదచల్లేందుకు , తప్పుడు సమాచారాన్ని ప్రచారంలో పెట్టాలనుకొనే ప్రమాదకర శక్తులు దీనిని వుపయోగించుకొనేందుకు ఎక్కువగా ముందుకు వస్తున్నాయి. అందువలన ఆధారంలేని పోస్టులు పెట్టి ప్రజల ఆయుధాన్ని పనికిరాకుండా చేయ వద్దని , బాధ్యతా యుతంగా వుండాలని మనవి.

పోప్‌కు ఆపాదించిన వ్యాఖ్యల విషయానికి వస్తే హిందూయిజం లేదా హిందూ మతాన్ని దుర్వినియోగం చేస్తున్న శక్తులు కేంద్రంలో అధికారంలో తిష్టవేశాయి. హిందూమతం పేరుతో వేల సంవత్సరాలుగా వునికిలోకి తెచ్చిన ఆచారాలు, నియమాలు, నిబంధనలన్నీ వర్తమాన కాలానికి తిరోగమనం తప్ప పురోగమనం కాదు. మన సమాజానికి అవి చేసిన హాని అంతా ఇంతా కాదు.అన్నీ వేదాల్లోనే వున్నాయష అంటూ కొత్త విషయాలకు దూరం చేశారు. అది ఘనీభవింపచేసిన కుల వ్యవస్ధ కర్ణుడు, ఏకలవ్యుల వంటి ఎందరో ప్రతిభావంతులను తెరమరుగు చేసింది. సమాజంలో శాస్త్రీయ ఆలోచనను మొద్దుబారచేసింది. పర్యవసానంగా పారిశ్రామిక విప్లవానికి దరిదాపుల్లో కూడా మన సమాజం లేకపోయింది.కులాల నిచ్చెన మెట్లతో అగ్ర, అధమ కులాలంటూ తోటి మానవులను పశువులకంటే హీనంగా ఇప్పటికీ చూస్తున్న ఈ దేశంలో నిజంగా పోప్‌ వంటి వారు పుట్టాలనుకుంటే ఆయన ఏ కులాన్ని కోరుకుంటారు? ఆవును వధిస్తే అంతం చూస్తాం అని వూగిపోతున్న అగ్రకులాల వారు అది ముసలిదయ్యో, జబ్బుచేసో చస్తే దాన్ని తీసి గోతిలో పాతిపెట్టటానికి మాత్రం ముందుకు రారు. తరతరాలుగా ఆ పనిచేస్తున్న దళితులు, గిరిజనులు ఎక్కడైనా మేం అలాంటి పని చెయ్యం అని నిరాకరిస్తే చచ్చిన ఆవు కోసం కూడా దాడులు చేసే అగ్రకులాల్లోనా వారి దాడులకు, అత్యాచారాలకు నిత్యం బలౌతున్న దళితుల, గిరిజనుల కడుపులోనా ? అటు దరి చేరనివ్వని అగ్రకులాలతో చెట్టపట్టాలు వేసుకోలేక ఇటు అనేక అంశాలలో తమకు దగ్గరగా వుండే దళితులు, గిరిజనులతో మమేకం కాలేక అటూ ఇటూ గాకుండా వుండే బీసీల్లోనా ? ఎక్కడ పుట్టాలనుకుంటున్నారో కూడా చెబితే సంతోషం. చెట్టుపేరు చెప్పి కాయలమ్ముకుంటున్నట్లుగా వివేకానందుడి పేరును వుపయోగిస్తూ ఆచరణలో ఆయన స్ఫూర్తికి, ఆచరణకు పూర్తి భిన్నంగా వ్యవహరించే నేటి కుహనా హిందూత్వ నాయకుల మాటలు, చేష్టలను విన్న కన్నవారెవరూ భారత దరిదాపులకే రారు, అలాంటిది తిరోగమన హిందువుగా పుట్టాలని ఎవరైనా కోరుకుంటారా ?

ఇక్కడ మరొక విషయాన్ని చెప్పుకోకపోతే అపార్ధం చేసుకొనే అవకాశం వుంది. మతాల చరిత్రను పరిశోధిస్తే,, పరిశీలిస్తే రోసిపోయిన ప్రతి మతంపై తిరుగుబాటుగానే కొత్త మతాలు వచ్చాయి. హిందూమతాన్ని వ్యతిరేకించి బౌద్ధం, క్రైస్తవాన్ని వ్యతిరేకించి ఇస్లాం పుట్టుకు వచ్చిన విషయం దాస్తే దాగదు. ప్రతి తిరుగుబాటు మతం ప్రారంభంలో పూర్వం వున్నదానికంటే అభ్యుదయంగానే వున్నకారణంగానే జనాలు ఆదరించారు.కొన్నాళ్లకు అవి కూడా పాత మతాల మాదిరే తిరోగమన స్వభావాన్ని సంతరింపచేసుకున్నాయి. జనానికి మత్తుమందు మాదిరి తయారై పురోగతికి ఆటంకంగా మారుతున్నాయి.

నాకు ఏసుక్రీస్తు మీద నమ్మకం లేదు, కేవలం ఈ సుఖానికి బానిసలా గడుపుతున్నానని పోప్‌ చెప్పినట్లుగా కూడా పైన పేర్కొన్న పోస్టులో పెట్టారు. పోప్‌ అలా మాట్లాడినట్లు ఆధారం లేదు కనుక దాన్ని పక్కన పెడదాం. ఈ రోజు అది హిందు, క్రైస్తవం, ఇస్లాం, బౌద్దం ఏమతాధికారి అయినా ఆ మతాలు చెప్పినట్లు చిత్తశుద్దితో సాదా సీదాగా గడుపుతున్న పెద్దను ఒక్కరినైనా ఎవరైనా చూపగలరా ? ప్రతి మత లేదా మతం పేరుతో జనం ముందుకు వచ్చే బాబా, స్వామీజీ, ఫాదర్‌లు, ముల్లా పేరు ఏదైతేనేం ఒక్కొక్కరు ఒక్కొక్కొ కుంభకోణానికో మరొక అక్రమానికో కేంద్రంగా మారుతున్నారా లేదా ? అందువలన దయచేసి ఇప్పటికే మన దేశం మతోన్మాద చిచ్చుతో మగ్గిపోతోంది. దానికి మరింత ఆజ్యం పోసే, రెచ్చగొట్టే పోస్టులు పెట్టి లేదా వాటిని అభిమానించి, పంచుకొని (లైక్‌లు, షేర్‌లు) ఆ చిచ్చును పెంచవద్దని మనవి.

New Delhi, 22 Dec 2015: Two days after media reports about first lot of stones having reached Ayodhya allegedly for construction of Ram Temple, Hindu Mahasabha has come out opposing the move and termed it as ‘political stone’ that Vishwa Hindu Parishad is taking there.

Addressing a press conference in Delhi on Tuesday, Swami Chakrapani, National President, Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, said: “It is political stone that (they are taking to Ayodhya). I want to tell VHP, Sangh Parivar and BJP to stop searching for political stone.”

Swami Chakrapani said he believes in law and wants Ram Temple under the law not through communal politics.

“Even before the verdict (of Allahabad High Court) came, I had said in 2010 that I can never support construction of a temple on dead bodies. I demanded fast-track court for the (Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi) case so that judgment can come fast. Leave aside the stone and bricks of Vishwa Hindu Parishad. It is their internal politics. If verdict comes in our favour today we will construct the temple with gold, leave aside stone. But that should be done under the law” he said.

“Leave aside the issue of stone (being sent to Ayodhya). It is political stone that (they are taking to Ayodhya). I want to tell VHP, Sangh Parivar and BJP to stop searching for political stone.”

Swami Chakrapani also condemned the alleged blasphemous remarks of a person called Kamlesh Tiwari.

“I was saddened with remarks of Kamlesh Tiwari about Prophet Muhammad. I felt sad as much as I was when Aamir Khan disrespected gods and goddesses in PK film. We opposed him and asked our office to find about his details. We found he was removed from our organisation in 2008. If he were with it today, I would have removed him. He does not deserve to be called Hindu. Similarly if a Muslim disrespects other’s religion cannot be Muslim,” said Swami.

Sharing the dais with leaders from Muslim, Sikh and Christian communities including Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, Swami Chakrapani demanded a strong anti-blasphemy law in the country.

“There is a need for religious communities – Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs – to take a vow that they would not allow anyone to hurt other’s religion. We demand strong anti-blasphemy law and such people should be strongly punished.”

“Such people are of no worth. They make such statement for which they can’t get respect even in their family, leave aside the society. It becomes an issue between Hindus and Muslims and the man becomes hero. We should not allow this thing to happen. It is the duty of us religious leaders to join hands and stop such people,” he said.

No indication from PM on Ram temple: VHP

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has said that there was no indication from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya.

In a statement on Monday, VHP general secretary Champat Rai said: “VHP is of the view that Ram Mandir at Ayodhya should be built through an act of parliament. VHP has always respected the court and have faith in it.”

“Time has come for the construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Lot of stones arrived. And now the arrival of stones will continue. We have signals from Modi government that the construction of temple would be done now,” media reports had quoted Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, president of Ram Mandir Nyas, as saying.

“Reports published in media are false. Arrival of stones is a common practice and since 1990, thousands of trucks full of stones have arrived and kept at Ramghat Karyashala after fretwork (nakkashi),” Rai said.

Nearly 1.5 million Sunni Muslim followers of the Indian Barelvi movement have formally decried violent extremists. 70,000 clerics at the annual commemoration of the founders’ death now condemn terrorist groups, saying they are ‘not Islamic organizations.’

In non-Muslim countries, fatwas, or Islamic religious rulings, are often associated with death threats: radical leaders have been known to issue such threats to non-believers such as prize-winning author Salman Rushdie and anti-Islam Dutch politician Geert Wilders.

But fatwas are simply religious pronouncements by Muslim legal experts – rarely are they violent. They’ve been issued on everything from cigarettes to fishing rules. And in Bareilly, India, 70,000 Sunni clerics have now turned the tables on extremist leaders by issuing a ruling against terrorist organizations from the Islamic State to the Taliban, as the Times of India reports.

Mufti Mohammed Saleem Noori and other clerics stressed that they do not consider terrorists truly Muslim, and hope that the media will stop referring to groups like Al Qaeda as “Muslim organizations.”

Thousands of followers of Ahmed Raza Khan, a 19th-century Sufi scholar who opposed the stricter Wahhabi school of Sunni Islam, gather at his tomb in Bareilly, Dargah Aala Hazrat, for three days each year to commemorate Khan’s death. Nearly 1.5 million of them signed a condemnation of terrorist ideology, as did 70,000 clerics from around the world.

Attendees also protested bombings in Syria on account of civilian deaths, and expressed specific condemnation for Islamic State’s November Paris attacks which killed 130, as well as US presidential contender Donald Trump’s call for a ban on Muslim travelers. Leaders in the movement have also said they will not read last rite prayers for anyone involved in terror attacks.

Similar condemnations, although not a formalfatwa, were issued at the festival in 2014.

India is home to the world’s second-highest number of Muslims, although they make up only 14 percent of the majority-Hindu country. Despite historic tensions between the two religions, which some say are resurgent thanks to the rise of Hindu nationalism, Indian Islam tends to be far more moderate than extremist ideologies, and few Indians have attempted trips to the Middle East to support Islamic State.

Indian Muslim leaders have formally condemned terrorism before, but never in such numbers.

Some Muslims say they feel constant pressure to denounce all crimes committed by co-religionists, with many left frustrated that their opposition to violent terrorism isn’t taken for granted. But many prominent Islamic groups have issued statements condemning radical Islam, such as a 2010fatwa from Muhammad Tahir ul-Qadri, a scholar who founded a global movement, Minhaj-ul-Quran International. Mr. Qadri’s decree sought to prove that terrorist attacks are “haraam,” or forbidden, in more detail than previous condemnations; his 600-page document “didn’t leave a single, minor aspect that, in the mind of radicals or extremists, can take them to the direction of martyrdom,” he told CNN.

In 2014, more than 120 Muslims scholars addressed Islamic State’s self-declared leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and his followers directly, crafting an18-page ruling that uses traditional Islamic methods to declare that the Quran forbids killing innocents, as well as journalists and aid workers; mandates protecting other monotheistic believers such as Christians and Yazidis; and that it is forbidden to declare a caliphate without the assent of all Muslims, among other points.

Increasingly, Muslim leaders are under pressure from their governments to publicly denounce extremists, and help detect people vulnerable to radicalization.

In his recent Oval Office address on fighting terror, President Obama asked Muslims to speak out against interpretations that are “incompatible with the values of religious tolerance, mutual respect, and human dignity,” as has the UK’s Prime Minister David Cameron, who emphasizes that Muslim communities are the first to benefit from victories against terrorism, both at home and abroad.

Terrorists have “hijacked our faith,” one British imam told the Guardian. Moderate Muslims often face death threats themselves if they speak out against more conservative Muslims.

As another stressed, “To them, [Islamic State], I am not any different to any other person in this cafe, or in a restaurant in Paris. For them, I am not a Muslim either.” Nor do some imams view extremists as Muslims – an attitude made popular by the #YouAintNoMuslimBruv response to last week’s stabbing attack on the London Tube.

In India, some leaders worry that online propaganda will reach their young people, even if few Muslims there today have been radicalized. But others hope that a continued journey towards peaceful coexistence between the country’s two major religions will keep terrorism at bay.

New Delhi terrorism expert Ajai Sahni believes that Muslims don’t feel as “isolated” in India as in many Western countries, he told The Wall Street Journal: although neighborhoods tend to be one religion or the other, education and employment bring Muslims and Hindus together each day.

The support net for nonbelievers is far wider and more comprehensive than even they realize

“But people need religion for community! For social support! People get so much from religion—counseling, emotional help during hard times, financial help during hard times, rituals and rites of passage, day care, even job networking. Why do atheists want to take that away?”

There are a lot of arguments people make for religion. But this one gets atheists’ attention. Not because it’s a good argument for religion—it’s not. People don’t need religion to help each other out, or even to form organized groups to help each other out. We form communities and support networks around all sorts of ideas and identities: philosophies, political views, sexual orientations, gender identities or lack thereof, hobbies, geographical accidents, food preferences, and much, much more. And the communities people build around religion are hardly evidence that God exists… any more than Dickens re-creation societies are evidence that Oliver Twist exists.

This argument gets atheists’ attention, not because it’s a good argument for religion, but because we recognize that there is a real need here. In many parts of the world, religion is deeply intertwined with the social and economic and political system — and when atheists leave religion and come out as atheists, they often find themselves isolated, cut off from the support they’ve relied on all their lives, in some cases cut off from their families and closest friends. And even when religion isn’t an overpowering behemoth dominating the social landscape, support systems can have religion woven into them in ways that people aren’t even aware of — but that can make these support networks alienating to many atheists. Atheists often have distinct needs — when you don’t believe in any gods or any afterlife, you often handle things like grief, illness, rites of passage, bringing up children, very differently from people who do believe in a god or an afterlife. And support services often don’t meet these needs: even when they intend to be inclusive, they often aren’t.

So in the last few years, secular support systems have been flowering like… well, like flowers. Like flowers in a movie about mutant radioactive flowers, growing at astonishing rates and to colossal size. And like mutant radioactive flowers, they’re spreading their seeds profusely, and are sprouting brand new shoots every year. The very existence of these support systems is making more and more atheists aware of needs in our community that aren’t being filled… and they’re inspiring people to create new systems to fill them. (Of course, when atheists do create communities and support services, plenty of believers will respond by saying, “But that’s ridiculous! How can you create communities around something you don’t believe in?” Yet another way that atheists can’t win: we’re heartless and uncaring if we don’t create community, laughable and incomprehensible if we do. But I digress.)

Here are just seven atheist support systems — or eight, depending on how you’re counting — that you might not have heard of, focusing on particular issues or demographics that you might not have known existed. This is by no means an exhaustive list, and more are being created all the time. And most of these organizations know about most of the others, and can point you in their direction. If you’re an atheist, I encourage you to bookmark this page: you never know when you or one of your atheist friends might need one of these services. And if you’re not an atheist, but you have atheist friends or colleagues or family, you’d be doing them a kindness to let them know that these support systems exist. Your atheist friends and colleagues and family members may have needs that you aren’t aware of, needs they’ve never said anything about… because it never occurred to them that these forms of help could even exist.

1a and 1b: Recovering From Religion and the Apostasy Project. One of the first pieces of support that atheists often need, and one of the most important, is support when they’re becoming an atheist in the first place. And one of the second pieces of support that atheists often need, and also one of the most important, is support when they decide to come out.

The process of letting religion go can be a difficult one. Depending on how important religion is to you, it requires that you re-think some deep foundations underlying every aspect of your life: it can shift how you see love, sex, pleasure, suffering, grief, mortality, and more, in ways both subtle and profound. And coming out as an atheist, again, can mean alienating the people you’re closest to, and in some cases even risking your job, your safety, custody of your children. Eventually, most atheists say that they’re happy to have let go of religion and are happy to have come out: but the transition can be a traumatic one. And some atheist communities — especially online ones — can be a bit harsh on the religious. Understandably: a lot of us have been badly injured by religion, and in any case we’re sick of treating it with kid gloves, as a special snowflake that can’t be criticized or mocked even when we criticize and mock other ideas. But if you’re in the process of questioning your religion and haven’t yet let go of it, it may not be the most supportive experience to get tossed into the shark tank at Pharyngula.

Hence, Recovering From Religion., and the just-opening-up Apostasy Project. Their purpose: to provide guidance, practical resources, and personal support — for people in the process of letting go of religious beliefs; for people who have already let go of their beliefs and are dealing with the effects of this change; and for people who have thoroughly left belief behind them, but fear being open about it.

As Apostasy Project coordinator Caspar Melville told me, “Those who have left religion behind describe the process as a kind of ‘break-up,’ and the period after they lose their faith as one of ‘mourning.’ It can be incredibly difficult, once you realise that you no longer believe, to ‘come out’, especially if you are breaking from the religion of your family, community or nation — and this is true no matter what faith tradition you are from. People we know who have had this experience have talked about how great it would have been if they had found a place where they could go for information support and advice… This is why we came up with the Apostasy Project.”

And Recovering From Religion founder and board chairman Darrel Ray concurs. “Recovering from religion,” he told me, “is a process filled with hazards and emotional land mines for those leaving. The religious often deny that they hate or wish to hurt anyone, yet (except for the most liberal) almost every religion sanctions those who leave and can make their life miserable.”

Both groups aim to provide support for apostates from all religions, and are working to create a pool of volunteers from as wide a variety of ex-religions as possible: evangelical Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Catholic, Jehovah’s Witness, Baptist, Mormon, Lutheran, and more. Recovering from Religion has over fifty in-person support groups — mostly in the United States, but also in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. And they are launching a brand-new project: a toll-free 24/7 hotline, to provide real time, caller-specific support to people in their most urgent time of need. 2: The Secular Therapist Project. So why on Earth would an atheist care whether their therapist was an atheist? Well, for starters: Atheists are commonlysubjected to religious proselytizing by their therapists. Atheists get told by therapists that spiritual health is an essential part of mental health; that they’ll never be mentally healthy if they don’t get right with their soul and/or God. Atheists even get referred to religious counseling centers by the courts.

And even when religious therapists aren’t overtly proselytizing, they can be very unsupportive to atheists, even damaging… without at all intending to. This is a pattern atheists have seen again and again: Very often, well-meaning religious believers just don’t know how to deal with the distinct needs of atheists, or don’t even know these needs exist. Or they think that their services are all-inclusive, when what they actually are is religiously ecumenical: they serve people of all religious denominations, but they don’t serve people with none. And they sometimes don’t even realize they have anti-atheist prejudices until they run unto them. You know how, a few decades ago (and probably still sometimes today), straight therapists would say they were gay-friendly and were able to work with gay clients… and only after the therapy got going, they’d run into prejudices and preconceptions and areas of ignorance about gay people they had no idea they had? It’s like that sometimes for religious therapists with atheist clients.

And non-believing therapists often face obstacles as well. They can lose clients, or referrals, if it becomes known that they’re non-believers. Or else their spouses and families can be targeted, and their businesses can be damaged or destroyed. Anti-atheist discrimination is a real thing, and it’s not a trivial thing.

So the Secular Therapist Project was created, to connect non-believers who need mental health care with professionals who are either non-believers themselves or are committed to providing secular, evidence-based care. And it was created to do it as confidentially as possible. As Secular Therapist Project director Darrel Ray told me, “One might think that most counselors and therapists are well trained to leave their religion or spiritual beliefs outside the office. That is definitely NOT the case. Unfortunately, there are probably more religion schools graduating marriage counselors, social workers and psychologists than secular schools. What’s more, even secular schools do not do a good job of training counselors to use secular and evidence-based methods. This means that when you are looking for a counselor, you don’t know what you are getting and may find out six weeks into therapy that they think you should pray or go back to church. (Conflict of interest alert: I’m currently in therapy with a therapist I found through the Secular Therapist Project. Why? Because I’ve been dealing with the recent death of my father and my own recent cancer diagnosis, and I needed a therapist who was familiar with the whole “understanding that death is really permanent” thing, and who knew how this was likely to shape the ways I dealt with mortality and grief. And maybe more importantly, I needed a therapist who I could trust to not argue with me about the whole “death being really permanent” thing, and not try to treat my depression by offering hope that I knew was false.)

3: Secular Organizations for Sobriety. And just like it’s often hard to find therapy that doesn’t include religion, it can be very hard to find sobriety support that doesn’t include religion. The primary network of sobriety support, Alcoholics Anonymous, explicitly relies on the concept of a higher power — and while some AA groups are open to interpreting this “higher power” language very loosely and vaguely and non-supernaturally, many atheists still find it alienating. What’s more, many AA groups aren’t so flexible about the “higher power” thing: they’re explicitly religious, and are firmly attached to religion being an essential part of recovery. (As many atheists have discovered when they’ve been ordered by the courts to attend these AA groups, and found themselves being proselytized to — under government duress.)
